I got called round to a friend's place today, she was having trouble with Gmail.

The best solution for her is to add her gmail account into Outlook, but she doesn't remember her password.

Or at least the password she insists is right just doesn't work.

When she accesses GMail with Edge though, it logs her straight in.

I went in to the Advanced Settings for Edge to see what it thinks her password is, but there is no entry for GMail.

Or Google for that matter.

She is not using any other password manager.

Is there anywhere else Edge or Win10 may be storing that password?

Have you tried Credential Manager in Windows?

     >Have you tried Credential Manager in Windows?<

Doesn't that just show Password characters as xxxx's?

Mine has a "show" link next to the row of dots.

So does mine, have the "show" option.

I hope my friend's computer does.

OK, so that didn't go as well I would have hoped.

Credentials Manager shows the same Managed Passwords list as the Edge Settings does.

Also, if it was there, I dont think it would have let me view it anyway as she doesn't have a Windows login password.

When I tried to view a password that was there it insisted I enter a Windows password even though there isn't one.

So, where else could Edge be drawing the GMail password from?

Me = flummoxed

I think that she is logged into gmail (edit, I meant to say Google) and she is automatically being logged in (to gmail) when she uses Edge: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/54490?hl=en

Edge is a supported web browser for gmail: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6557?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

@hammerer , so should I expect to see a Google account in the Credentials Manager then, because I don't?

Her Android phone is also logging in automatically to GMail.

Can the password be retrieved from her phone?

Me = getting desperate

No, it is totally separate to Credentials Manager. One of those articles told you that you logout from your Google account to stop automatic sign-in to Gmail.

In your case, you don't want to logout, you want to see the password or change it. So go to your Google/Gmail account where you will probably need to reset the password. This generally involves getting an email at a secondary email address or a TXT to a phone. That address or phone number will not be completely visible to you but the start and end characters are displayed which allows you to confirm that the password reset message will go to an account that you still have access to.

AFAIK, there is no way to display the password to a google account. If you forget it, the only option is to reset it which requires access to a secondary account or device.

The other option would be to change it but that requires you to enter your password to authorise the change.

Thank you @Hammerer , that gives me a much clearer idea of how to proceed.

See if you can add a recovery email or mobile number  to the google account and then do a "forgot password"

When I installed Lastpass on my wife's PC it trawled Edge and Chrome (i think) and imported all the passwords it found. I was then able to see them all.

Would that work for you?

Really sounds like you are on a knife edge here. I hope they already have a secondary authentication option (alt email or phone number) configured as I suspect trying to add one will prompt for the password and failing to provide it will result in things going into lock down.
