Ok I have been having weird issues with apps on a hardrive partition that won't open, programs installed on hard drive won't update, unable to copy files from the drive etc, i have run every test i could think of, including Seagate tools and they all come back with a clean bill of health except when i try chkdsk /f /r

The disk is a

ST2000dm006-2dm164

I tried running a quick format but it just dropped out after a couple of hours saying formatting had failed

The drive is under warranty for another few weeks I think (I put the serial number in seagates online doohickey) would they accept it under warranty if its not flagging with seatools?

Sorry for the incoherence i'm just frustrated with the dratted thing

Could be a dodgy power supply cable, sata cable, or motherboard port.

You need to try the drive in another machine really.

Mechanical drive is generally salvageable unless it has started getting bad blocks, which you can see in Event Viewer.

If you happen to have a Live Linux DVD you could boot up from that and run the 'Disks' program, and see what that has to say about the Seagate's health.   Disks will give SMART data and be able to run tests.     Maybe swap SATA ports and cables as well?

BTW forgot to mention that Disks will only give that information for hard drives attached to SATA ports I think.  I know it doesn't work for usb portable drives.

I've seen and experienced such when the external drives have been sitting idle in a drawer for some time, as well as when the USB port has not properly 'closed' for disconnection.

Usually I mount them in a drive cradle, then use EaseUS Partition Manager to examine and rectify.

Download and see what this program says as well:

CrystalDiskInfo

You don't necessarily need Seatools to report an error to have the drive replaced under warranty.

www.hdsentinel.com is another gerat tool for seeing drive health status.

Ive seen faulty drives pass every test I could throw at them.
If in doubt, throw it out :-)

Getting warranty is another issue, you need to prove its faulty . If it passes Seagates test tools , dont expect an easy warranty claim experience

It may not be faulty, it could be another issue with the PC/OS .

Usually, it will be a HD fault though .
You could try a firmware upadate , if available

Quick Update as I haven't made it back to to the computer yet

It's my secondary drive in the machine
It's an internal hard drive
It's been on the same controller doohickey since it was installed almost 2 years ago
The data on the drive isn' the important hence the reason I tried to format it.

I will try swapping the controller for it, and try out some of those tools

Just a quick additional query
Is there a way to stop my PC sleeping when I am running a scan as I don't want to wait around tapping the mouse every 20 or so minutes
