I know nothing about UPS's and just want something at home for the ONT and NAS as we have the odd power cut every now and then and I'm relying more and more on the NAS for my work files.

Is something like the Dynamix Defender 650VA going to be enough ?

An ONT and NAS aren't going to be too taxing are they ?

Do you need a router to work as well? An ONT isn't typically useful without a router.

There have been a few similar threads on Geekzone. Get the Constant Vigil Sentry Lite if you want a good flexible backup for ONT / Router, then a full UPS for the NAS. Or just get a decent size NAS to run them all, but it's less efficient as instead of using a 12V NAS it converts to and from 240V.

Even cheaper, use the sentry lite to back up your ONT / router and keep your work files in cloud storage.

This plus a 12v (car or similar) battey, this will give you hours of run time for a very good price. In my experience cheap/small ups's fail quickly and have very poor run time. This is why I settled on this solution.

says small cheap ups then links to ali express. made me laugh a little.

can you have the NAS shutdown after x minutes? my APC 750VA ups will power my router, an access point and my computer/monitor for about 20 miuntes. the PC treats it as a battery so acts like a laptop so when the battery gets to 75% it will shut down. then my router, and access point will go about about another 5-6 hours.

it all depends on how long you want it to last as to how big an ups you need to get.

Hi, I agree that a Sentry type 12-24V solution is a good one, however if you want the Synology to gracefully shutdown then I would recommend an APC CS-650 which will interface with DSM and both shut it down at a suitable time and turn it back on again once power returns

There are a number of other brands/models that work with DSM to do the same, but the APC is one I have used in many many setups and it works very well.

I have been using the Eaton 5E units with exactly the same config. Synology DS218+, ONT, router, maybe a small switch as well.

Works perfectly fine, the NAS can initiate the shutdown when the battery is low, connected using USB cable.

There are two different types of UPS, online or interactive.

The online units are a much better setup and offer better protection and voltage output but cost more. The interactive can still expose you to issues. If the gear is sensitive or important then online is the way to go.
