My previously reliable desktop PC is now refusing to fully operate. It starts to load the OS and then crashes.

This happens with the Win10 on the HDD. It gets to show the windows symbol in the middle of the screen and the dots do about 3 revolutions and then stop.....

I have two DVD with versions of Linux Mint and these do a similar start and then stop.

I have put the memory through a test and it appears OK.

Any other suggestions?

HDD issue? You could try a repair with an Windows 10 installation disc?

Is there much on the HDD that can't be salvaged if you have to do a reinstallation?

Perhaps try and remove the HDD and access via another PC (USB enclosure or SATA dock) to remove all the files you can.

You could also try to do a disk scan with HDD manufacturer utilities to review disk errors, I'm not sure if this can be done via USB.

Remove everything from the PC you can, use all integrated stuff, and see what happens with the Linux DVD..... if works, add something back in, try again...if stops, probably found the faulty part.

Thanks but I don't think the HDD is the problem. I can't load from Linux DVD either

Thanks. I have only got a display card plugged in - GTS 450. The motherboard GA-55A-UD3 does not appear to have an integrated display.

Powering up/down a few times I get a "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen but it crashes soon after.

Try 1 RAM stick at a time/slot.

Are all fans spinning OK? Could work long enough for a CPU/GPU to heat to its' shutdown temperature.

CPU/GPU fans seems OK. System crashes at same point from cold or after successive starts

If you cant even get live disks to boot then your motherboard or cpu is failing.

Given how old it is now (socket 1156, i7 880 era) I wouldn’t be surprised at it’s current state. If you can get into bios then fiddling around with voltage might get it to boot, motherboard might not be providing enough power as it used to or cpu requires more volts to maintain stock clocks.

You then should check memory once you can boot to usb and run memtest. Following that, your windows install etc.

The Linux Cinnamon 19.2 disk has an optional menu which has a memory test which I ran without any problems. Another option is "Start in compatibility mode". Not sure what it is but I tried it. It lists actions as it progresses and stops every time on line :-
