For anyone interested, Norman Ross are selling a stack of Verbatim 1TB external drives for $248. Their sticker price on the back says $449 but I don't believe that. Checked a few other sites and they can be got for prices starting from just over $300. Thinking of buying one or two myself to put in my PC. Wonder if I could get anything else off them!

BTW Don't have any connection with Norman Ross, other than somewhere to go at lunchtime when I'm bored.

Many white sticker prices at HN or Norman Ross can typically be up to 100% more than the product is actually worth - just so their big A4 special tickets make the price look good.

Now that's what I call a markup! I knew they both charged more thann most people, but not that much.

Still, they're coming in at least $50 cheaper than elsewhere. May have to speak to the finance committee.

That's not necessarily the markup on all products. Both companies tend to regularly buy in specials and will price the products out with historical retails or supplier RRP's so their "special" looks better. Not all of their products are priced like this, however many are.

Virtually all of their TV's have white sticker prices significaly above what you will pay at any other retailer - likewise it makes people think they are getting a bargain when they haggle down the staff or see a big A4 ticket.

And potentially you'll get a better HDD as well. Many of these cheap external drives are cheap HDD's, often with a very small cache. Many won't deliver the same level of performance that a typical SATA II HDD will do.

Having said that however if you're just using a USB connection it's not necessarily an issue - if you are using ESATA however it's something worth comparing.

Unfortunately the for the average shopper out there (who has never heard of pricespy etc) these kind of deals do represent real bargains. This particular example may well be better than the competitors, but these places have offered many "bargains" in the past which have not compared to specialist retailer prices.
