Hi guys,

Probably my first topic here so I hope its in order :P

My flat mate and I until recently were both on Vista 64 Ultimate.
He ran his with no antivirus what so ever while I leaned towards being protected.
My favorite antivirus has been the trend micro products for some time now as I have found them to be non system intensive under normal use scenarios.

I have tried several others - AVG Free - Norton and found that these did not either full all of my needs or work to heavy on the system.

But then I started to notice considerable differences between my machine and my flat mates.
He would launch an application or more so a game and it would launch in seconds where mine would appear to freeze for up to what would seem like a minute and then launch.

I tend to keep my machine more up to date and he would not even care about that stuff.
This happens in more than one application / game and as of reading that Windows 7 media supports NZ Freeview, I think I will be upgrading tonight.

We both have recent machines mine 2.4 E6600 @ 3ghz / 4G RAM / sli 8800gt's.
His is in the same region.

So the only major significant difference between our machines is that I am somewhat "protected" by an antivirus client that seem more hell bent on causing frustration, to that note I am an IT professional and wanted to see if others find this installment of Trend Micro not so great, which sucks as I signed on for two years.

Also I have disabled most warnings and unneeded resource using extras and basically use these three features.

1, Antivirus
2. Firewall
3. keystroke encryption

Everything around program control etc has been disabled and I still have these issues.
Sharing is absolutely screwed sharing at slower than download rates and sharing is stuffed as well.
I'm not sure what more I can do when I say share with "everyone" and my flat mate still gets access denied.

So I tending to agree with him Antivirus is the biggest virus out there....
Your thoughts?

Games freezing up for a minute? Seems like more than an AV issue to me. To confirm, uninstall your AV or disable it (using services.msc and Autoruns) and check if the game loading speeds improve. IMHO it could be a fragmentation issue.

As for AntiViruses, I personally don't use an AV and would always recommend one to a non-geek but for geeks I recommend a good dose of common sense + some tools/skills.

Trend Micro was never good (read: top 5). AVIRA has been consistently in the top 3 across various tests since more than an year now, but it's false-positives still remain high. None of my clients ever complained about large performance degrade such as in your case, however it's not as fast as McAfee and Symantec - the new entrants in the top-5 with new high-performance, high-detection and low-false positive engines. *

However, Symantec still faces the issue of bloated and messy install, and I've personally seen cases of conflicts with other programs and Symantec. (Haven't yet tested the new McAfee)

I've never seen this before but know it to be the antivirus client because after turning it off sharing became viable again at normal speed, probably if anything its over protecting.

I would take the advice with a grain of salt as the top 5 will change depending on what source you look at.

And no antivirus these days?
Sorry mate but that?s a no brainer, if your not on windows it will help to great lengths, 64bit even better and less likely to be targeted.

"tool;s/skills" = more time taken up to remove threats, an antivirus client free's you up in this regard.
But would you use XP without a antivirus client?
I wouldn't, Vista 64 probably ok but not worth the risk IMO.
I value my data and time.

Thansk for your thoughts but I was hoping for someone who has seen this before :)

Yes, *I* would use XP without an antivirus, infact, since XP SP2 onwards, I stopped using an AntiVirus.
Shifted to Vista only a few months ago (bought a new comp). I haven't been infected even once since the past 3-4 years. (Yes, I use p2p apps too). To my credit, researching malware is my hobby, and as you can tell from my title, I collect viruses too.

But you don't need to be a malware researcher to stay secure without wasting your time. If you just set up the comp properly and follow safe practices, an AntiVirus isn't a necessity. I've said this before on this forum and many others. Google it up if you wish, although if you're interested, I can tell you the steps involved in making your computer (for the most part) virus proof.
Thing is, also involves educating the user, so if you think it's worth your time knowing how to avoid clicking on fake folders/files which are in reality viruses, I'll be more than happy to let you in the know-how. :)

But do know this: AntiViruses aren't fool proof. For the most part, they're dumb. The so called advanced heuristics still won't detect a malicious program I could write in less than a minute. They just give you a false sense of security. You think you're secure and skip the other important aspects of the OS/user, but all it takes is one little virus to slip through and wreak havoc. Believe me, I've seen this happen too many times and that's the reason why I don't rely on AVs anymore. I'd rather trust my
instincts.

I agree that the top-5 would change depending on the source, but av-comparatives is a quite trusted source within the AV circles, and has been in the scene since a long time now. You can also look at virus.gr, another popular source but they haven't conducted any new AV tests this year. (Last years tests are still available though). Either ways, you won't find Trend Micro amongst the top of any list.

MalwareBytes now have a 64 bit compatible real time protection module. I'm running it on this laptop and notice no degredation in system performance, Vista business 64, 4GB RAM.
