Yesterday I was given a Compaq C700 Notebook which the previous owner said has been freezing when trying to do windows updates. Before giving me the notebook, they took it to a tech in their town and he told the then owner that the notebook has a serious fault.  Now that I have it, I have run it for awhile and it freezes up after about 10 minutes. I did some tests on it, memory, drive etc and the hard drive test (in the bios) came back error 10008 failed hard disk. I then used Hitachi's drive test on it and got a disposition 0x70 error which basically told me the drive is faulty. Would a faulty hard drive cause the notebook to freeze up after awhile? I don't want to go out and buy a new 2.5in drive only to find something else is wrong. Its running Vista Home Basic (at the moment)

If its always around the 10min marks, I dont think itd be the hard drive unless you were running the exact same programs all the time causing the heads to hit the potential damaged part of the drive.......Id suspect overheating of some sort causing the freezing and the HDD just happens to have an error as well.

Remove the HDD and try running off a bootable live CD such as Ubuntu or similar (or do these fail if no HDD detected ? Havent tried it myself :) ) and see if it freezes still in another OS without the HDD.

Removed the drive and have it running off a Ubuntu live cd, so far so good.
