is anyone else having problems this morning with POP access to their Gmail accounts? Using the Snow Leopard Mail client, I'm presented with a dialog stating that the POP server has rejected my password.

I can successfully to login via the Gmail website, but the first time I did that this morning I was told that my account had been accessed in the last few days from a China IP address (WTF?!). Needless to say I promptly changed my password to a much more secure one (the old one was pretty weak, although not easily guessable).

Do Google have an official support channel for Gmail issues such as this? All I've found so far is a link to their support forums, which for all I know may be peer support rather than put you in touch with an actual Google rep.

Good luck getting in contact with Google for support on anything. Even when I had a paid apps account (which comes with "support" based on a PIN) their first response was always "go to the forums".

Unless people make a lot of noise, and some large blogs get and run with the news, I don't expect things being fixed... And even so.

That is sad to hear... but I guess you get what you pay for, which in my case is a big fat $0

I've been using Gmail as my primary email account pretty much since its inception, and have had POP access ever since that was introduced too. It would be a shame if this was the beginning of the end of what has been a mostly trouble-free relationship. Here's hoping this is just a minor glitch, and that POP access will be restored shortly. With the amount of emails I get daily, using the web interface just doesn't sit well with my workflow.

OK, so I tried setting up IMAP access instead, and am told

"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Gmail IMAP” or try again.

The server returned the error: Web login required: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78754 (Failure)"

I followed the link, reset my CAPTCHA, logged back in and now I have access (both POP and IMAP). Thanks for making this clearer, Google :-(

I guess it is one good reason to pay for it, especially if you use it for business. Good support is essential.

+1.

We've been on hosted apps for many years now, and the handful of times we've had to contact support, they've been pretty quick.

Nope. As I replied earlier, I had to reset my CAPTCHA and login via the web interface to reactivate access. I only found this out when attempting to use IMAP, as when that failed it presented a much more helpful error message, including a URL which set me on the path to glory.

For those who don't know. Gmail has a daily limit of 2GB of transfer over POP/IMAP and will not accept connections after that (have it all the time when migrating mailboxes from Gmail). It could be that your account was accessed and your emails downloaded from China?
