Hi there

What's the best way to receive faxes onto a laptop?

Online service? If so any recommendations for about 200 per month?

As these seem to be about $20 per month is there a nice small budget fax machine o would I be looking at an all in one printer/fax?

It's weird - I still can't quite get my head round the fact that I have a phone line, modem and a PC but can't receive faxes for free!!!

If you have those three things you are only missing fax software. You have to buy that anyway if you buy a fax machine (its built into the machine).

So get a desktop fax package, plug your fax capable modem in, and go nuts.

You haven't given any details of what OS you are running, but Windows for example includes Windows Fax in many versions. Simply configure your fax modem and you're away.

Why not use Fax to Email? That way you can receive a fax wherever you have access to your email. Costs me about $5 a month and no need for a separate fax line.

The Dynalink RTA 1025 is an ADSL modem, not a voice/data/fax modem.

For fax you need an older type of modem. It's quite possible your laptop has one built-in, or if not you can buy an external one.

er, that's an ADSL modem. You'll need a dialup modem to receive faxes and have it connected to your line+computer that's on whenever you want to receive faxes. (And of course you won't be able to take/make calls while recieving calls/vice versa)

I use Xnet for Fax to Email (they aren't my ISP). There are other providers though.

Cheers. Website says 'Fax to Email is an add-on service: you must have existing Voicemail services with WorldxChange;'.

Do you get fax only?

Also have a voip number. All up $15+ a month. Surely someone will offer it without needing other services though.

But they seem to charge $20 so this seems a good deal.

2talk offer it too, the incoming seems very reliable, the outgoing, well I am yet to get it to accept a tiff file and send it, but perhaps thats just my bad working of photoshop ;)

Don't want to give too much away, but just found out that one VOIP company does free faxmail as part of their PAYG package,so even if you pay very little as you go....

Funny thing is, it probably will encourage me to sign up to a bigger package.
