My usual source has moved to Australia where a technician can make a living and has places hiring, so I cant just pick them up free anymore.

Where are people getting them from these days?

Low ESR etc ones.

You could try www.mouser.co.nz

I believe all goods come for offshore so there is the freight costs consideration. Last time I used them this wasn't unreasonable though (about $5 or $6, so obviously not cost effective if you're buying 3 x 10c caps but if you're buying more and different types of components it can work out OK).

You can also try your nearest branch of Jaycar of ocurse.

Yes, active components is great, and very reasonable when it comes to small orders - buying 1 cap, they were just as fast and helpful as when I make a large order.

Ive bought some off a guy on trademe anyway. Not quite the right values, 1000uF instead of 680 for the real low voltage ones, but should be fine as they will fit under the heatsink ok.

Low ESR does not mean anything, you need to lookup the datasheet to find out what the ESR is and match it. I get my motherboard caps off eBay if we don't have them at work. Usually PSU caps are not too hard, but motherboards are a bit harder to find the right value. Fixed a number of Dell PCs, you can get the PC for cheap and they are good apart from the capacitor supplier issue of the 90's (overfilled capacitors, affected almost all motherboard manufacturers).

Sometimes it is worth going to RS Components. Courier is expensive, but we are close to their Mt Wellington office in Auckland so I can pick-up.

Mouser is good. You can also try Digikey (US) that has a strong presence in NZ. Personally I prefer Element 14 (Farnell) due to good technical content and fast service despite no NZ depo, and I don't pay...

You can never have enough Volvos!
