dukester: I recently had to help a work mate who allowed one these scammers to connect to him. He even gave them his credit card number ($900 taken)

How promptly did the bank reimburse him?

Apparently it took about 2 weeks, but the bank repaid the money.

Just wanted to contribute that these guys are back, Happened to me today for the 4th time this month! Happened to a friend too few weeks ago too. They are going by the name of Windows Computer Wellington or something. Cant believe they haven't put a stop to this yet, who knows how many people they go around preying upon and scamming. if anybody wanted here's the link just for the record. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=48&topicId=128793

A guy from malwarebytes actually taped them, here's the YT video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a_edowfgl8

full article here: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-04/11/malwarebytes

These scumbags are targeting people on Fridays & Weekends so by the time people realize they have been scammed they cant get in touch with their banks. Although NZ banks are pretty good in case anybody is scammed just call them up immediately they can charge back your money within 30 days or so. Probably a good idea to remain on a Dynamic IP that changes, maintain your anti virus/firewall and DO NOT install ANYTHING they ask you to. Re install Windows if you let them install team viewer or some other remote access software.

We got a 3 calls, within 3 days, from a indian gentleman claiming to be from "Windows New Zealand"

When my father sarcasticly said, "Don't you mean Microsoft New Zealand", he got extremely agitated, and said somewhere along the lines, of "I'm not stupid, you know you can hang up if you want", and then they had the nerve to phone back later, and which was when I screamed, down the phone for probably about 20 seconds. Somewhere along the lines of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH, and we haven't heard from them since.

Thank heavens, my family is fairly computer knowledgable, and wouldn't fall for this in 10,000 years.

And now they're branching out and pretending to be from IRD and demanding tax payments.

In an aggressive mood from what I heard. But still, chances are they will sound hilarious to savvy people.

There seems to be another spate of the computer windows thing.

They accept only credit card payments. They must have to open merchant accounts by the hundreds every week and shutdown by the hundreds every week. How does that part of it work?

They probably have accounts in a country where the level of scrutiny is not the same as here.

Yeah, I'm just finding it hard to believe the card companies cannot spot the patterns and make it just that bit more difficult to make it uneconomic. I can talk myself into believing it, but evidence is lacking.

There may be no exact pattern - different prices being charged, etc. The pattern may emerge much later when people complain, not instantly. Different from the $9.84 scam (worth reading this).

Only managed to keep "Microsoft Technical Support" on the line for 29 minutes on Saturday night at 9:30pm.  My phone cord didn't reach the computer you see and so they had to give me an instruction and then wait while I walked over and did it.  But my pen for writing the instructions ran out twice and it took aaaaages to find another one.  When I started getting "Page cannot be found" after they wanted me to go to www.join.me, they switched track and said they could see my computer needed the hackers removed and asked for a $130 payment.  When I asked whether I could pay this over 3 months they put ME on hold  hehe.  When they came back, they said they would call back in a week and hung up.  Shame really because I was going to have to go out to the car to get my credit card, and have trouble finding the keys, and then that credit card would have expired so I had to find the new one that came in the mail.....  My Mrs could not believe what they put up with from me.

Yes - yes they do

As hard as it can be to believe at times, a lot of people get taken in by these scammer. They don't know any better.

Which is exactly why they keep calling.

There is always going to be someone ready to part with their cash.  I remember reading about the lady getting ready to get a 250,000 dollar loan out to service "medical costs" of her "overseas lover".

It makes me physically ill!

Just had a call from a friend of mine. They've just been done for $500 this morning. They are intelligent people but knowing nothing about computers thought it was legit.

I'm just on my way around there to assess the damage.

I assume it's just a case of removing teamviewer and any malware installed? They've contacted their banks etc, and we'll be changing all passwords etc.
