If you actually want to enjoy using the laptop buy a Macbook Air 13" and put Parallels on it. Best laptop I have ever owned.

OMG you must be joking? Loading WINDOWS onto an INTEL platform and paying a premium to boot.. I never understand..

/me agrees with this comment, but NOT if you are spending it on Apple products... Have some pride :)

I probably should moderate this comment to not sound so...something.. But I'll say this instead... If you want to buy an Apple product, run the Apple OS, otherwise why bother, plenty of other manufacturers have a similar look and feel, without the premium pricetag.

A strange but true quote from PC World - "the fastest Windows laptop [was] a Mac".

I personally use both but I'd use windows to the point of having to use it for compliance issues at work and everything else gets done on my Mac.

I run Apple OSX Lion not bootcamp. I use Parallels to run a few Windows applications for work. They seamlessly run as if in the Mac system. It works really well. Its fun to play.

Given the budget Mac hardware may not be practical. You always get more for your money with non-apple hardware, though it could be argued you trade quality for price.

Lol I have a similar issue with my 6yo, pink overrules price/spec/practicality/everything!!

I do admit the mac products have that 'cool' factor, and I understand (in general terms) that they do run faster/better (insert argument here)

...however given the use of the laptop as a general home computer, and the budget set by the missus (and the bank manager) it's not worth looking at this time. Besides I have all the PC software already and don't really feel the need to buy more just to be able to run the same stuff, and no I am not against apple as we do have collectively 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and an iPod touch in the house.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Yeah money's too tight to mention, know the feeling. We ended up getting an HP Laptop for home use. About six months later my wife jealously looks at the Air and feels disappointed. What we should have got was an iMac 21.5. Next time.

OK, back on topic : Which brand Laptop?

Im sure Apple Purists would kill me for calling a MacBook a "laptop" :) No?

Anyway my vote is for Toshiba. I personally own a Dell that is nearly 3 years old now and in desperate need of an upgrade. For the price they are good value but the build quality is not so great... I had 3 Warranty claims in the first 12 months - Lcd died, powersupply blew up and hdd died... all replaced for free by a local technician that came to my house - After that I've had no further problems!

I also use a Lenovo Thinkpad for work and although they are better than the old IBM laptops I wouldnt reccommend them either and probably outside the price range here.

One thing to consider that I didn't when buying the dell is Graphic card - even if only using it for browsing the web, a crap graphics card will ruin the whole experience!

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

You can have any two of the following: Price, Features and Quality.

For me, I value Features and Quality generally and when I make computer purchases I tend to look at 4 years as the life of a PC and an extra few hundred dollars for a bigger processor or more memory, something I will benefit from every day, it's not that big of a decision.

You can get a decent Lenovo for $799 plus GST - 4GB RAM (just enough), 15.6" screen, etc.

Been very happy with my Toshiba Satellite A500 and the newer models are even nicer.

Regarding buying a macbook? Please. Unless you have a burning desire to use OSX there is no longer ANY reason to pay such a ridiculous premium for a mac laptop.

You can get better hardware with as good build quality for significantly less money. Have been able to for several years. You also don't have to piss around with adaptors for mini displayport to hdmi etc.

Yes, a Macbook is a lot nicer than a $599 laptop from noel leeming, but take the macbook price and buy a laptop and you will get 2-3x the hardware with just as good build quality.
