I purchased a HD 7750 from Computer Lounge for around 170$. It's a fantastic card, would smoke your 8800 while not even needing a PCI-E power connector. Very cool and quiet. I purchased this for my Media Server which runs full HD to my Plasma and playing back ripped blu-rays works great.

Dropped the idea at the moment of getting a new card.
Since the initial incident it has all been smooth sailing, and in the weekend I check for dust buildup and while there was a light coating (to be expected), there were no bunnies to clog things up.

(also my budget has vanished into bills ..)

I realise it's a moot point now, but for what it's worth that link doesn't show your card as being 13 places from the current top of the line. That link shows your card being in the 14th aribtary grouping of cards with somewhat similar levels of performance.

It does give a better indication of what you could replace that 8800 with to maitnain parity performance though.

This for $120 should be roughly equivalent to what you have now.
This for $215 would be a very good bang for your buck upgrade.

Both both are still total overkill if you don't want to do any gaming

I just got a GTX560 (Leadtek) for about $260 from einfo.co.nz and I can run Skyrim on max settings everything highest it can go smooth as silk, probably about 45-50 fps (havent measured it though)

Im running i5 2500, 8G 1600mhz RAM just so you know... real good for the money mate

Oh and as above, the GTX560 is HEAPs better than the 550 for a little more ;)
