just to throw it out there, there was a study recently released rubbishing antivirus products as reported: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/01/anti_virus_is_rubbish/
While I believe there is nothing new in the findings, I would say there should be less emphasis on the type of antivirus product used, Norton used to be good until symantec decided to buy and integrate the security suite into the product - I stopped bothering when I bought a PC that came with both Norton and McAffee installed.
These days I use Microsoft's security essentials which does the job with minimal footprint on machines that I have to support. I run linux and Mac OS on personal machines so it is a non issue
