I've had 3 or 4 Intel 320 series drives die on me in the last few years. The 330 Series seems much more reliable.

bfginger: Crucial has the best track record for reliability. OCZ has probably the worst.

I think you need to take into account total sales. OCZ are probably the number one or two.

buy your SSD locally. *When* it fails, its easier to return/RMA. Worth paying more.

You appear to be comparing Samsung 840 Pro against cheaper Samsung 840 (non Pro version).
Edit - You will notice also that one is 256GB and the other is 240GB (different NAND chips).

i just put in the same model/manufacturer code into amazon, and on that page, amazon said "this is the old model, a newer one is now available"

That's a fair enough comment, but here is one study, where you can see the % of RMA'd drives for different brands (you'll need to translate from Dutch to English):

Perhaps the study is a little bit old now, so if the study was repeated, I'd expect to see Samsung with a larger market share. But I don't think we'd see OCZ go from one of the worst to one of the best.

Go to the last page to see the most recent updates. Perhaps an unrealistic test you might say, but once again we see some brands with a quite early failure compared to others, while others (Samsung 830, Crucial and Intel) perform well, with some drives making it past 1000 TiB.

Note - that Kingston X25-V in the endurance test is a re-badged Intel. :)

I'm assume you mean that you took the code from PB Tech, which is listed as MZ-7PD256B and searched on Amazon and found a link to a page selling the Samsung 830, which states that there is a newer model, the Samsung 840.

If you a search for MZ-7PD256B on google, most links are for the Samsung 840 Pro. I don't know how the Samsung model numbers work, but the Samsung 830 and 840 Pro both seem to be listed with the same or similar model numbers MZ-7PD*, while the 840 appears to use the number series MZ-7TD*.

The 840 Pro would appear to be the true replacement for the well regarded Samsung 830, with both using MLC NAND.

The Samsung 840, is indeed a newer model than the 830, but it should be regarded as the new budget model (using TLC NAND), not the replacement for the 830. Of course there is nothing wrong with choosing the budget model if that best meets your needs. The Samsung budget model, might still be better than the drives offered by some other vendors.

In any case, if you have decided on the Samsung 840 240GB, PB Tech also has the 840 for quite a bit less than the 840 Pro and not a huge amount more than the Amazon price, once currency conversions and shipping is taken into account. Or you could use pricespy.co.nz or the geekzone price search:
