That HP does look pretty good; I get a few things from pbtech but have heard mixed reviews of them when things go wrong... Thankfully I've never had problems with items bought from them.

Does the HP use the same panel as the dell top 24inch ultrasharp that's around $900 (? sorry dell site seems dead for me at the moment)

The other one I've been watching on and off is this one:

It's IPS but 8ms instead of 6ms but a bit cheaper than the HP. A couple of other online only retailers (but nz local I think, advantage and alphacity) have it for $404 and $425. I'm hoping it might come up on one of the dell cyber sale(s) though.

Anybody know how much of a difference that 2ms makes (probably not much to my eyes ;-) ) and also what other differences there are?

I doubt you will notice 2ms difference.

I purchased an HP IPS 24 inch monitor a few years ago, and had to return it, due to it have a large number of dead pixels. I instead went for a dell ultrasharp, and has been good. Although the first one did fail during it's warranty period, (developed a vertical line on the screen), the refurbished replacement (which was the newer model), has been good.

Returns are a pain of course but dead pixels are always possible on any display.

A good pixel warranty is key for that.

The marketing response times are usually not very relevant to real world, usually best to look a review of what you want to get on tftcentral or digitalversus where they measure the response time and input lag.

A good pixel warranty is key for that.

A good pixel warranty is essential. I think the dell ultrasharps have one of the best pixel warranties, as they have different grades of displays, and the ultrasharp are rated at the top. I don't think the HP pixel policy at the time was all that good, but I returned it to a local retailer, as it cost over 1k at the time, and I didn't want dead pixels.

We have some Dell Ultrasharp U2412Ms at work and they are very good indeed. Also have a U2713hm , but wasn't as impressed with that due to back light leakage at the bottom of the screen on dark backgrounds (fault maybe?), but with everyday documents open etc its nice and sharp with its matte finish, next upgrade for home will likely be that given I got it for $740

For certain 24-30 inch HP Performance displays, HP guarantees zero bright dots.
This policy applies to ZR24w, ZR2440w, ZR2740w, ZR30w, LP2475w, LP2480zx (regardless of manufactured date):

Bright sub-pixel defects 0 maximum
Dark sub-pixel defects 4 maximum
Total combined bright and dark sub-pixel defects 4 maximum
Full Pixel Defects pixel defects: 0 allowed

i think thats just a bit gimmicky anyway, no one will ever notice a few ms, human brain simply isn't fast enough

I'm using 2x U2312HM at home and I do a lot of gaming, pretty happy with them.

Most games are being designed for 16:9 ratio first these days so 16:9 ratio monitors are marginally better than 16:10 for gaming.

16:10 is of course marginally better for any general office work or programming/IT etc.
