raytaylor: With regards to those errors, the smtp server itself is unable to contact the destination server to deliver your message. Usually this is a network connection issue between the two.

As said above, it sounds like its just a better idea to change the smtp provider.

Just get a decent hosting provider, which full SMTP using SSL via your domain, and get everyone using the same settings for everything to keep it simple. I have never had the problems you refer to.

Web hosts shouldn't be confused with email hosts. Most website hosts offer email hosting but aren't specialists, so they end up on black lists. Specialist email hosting (gmail, fastmail, etc) is much better in my experience.

Fastmail is US$15-$30 per year. Just FYI, I'm not associated with them, and I'm not even a user yet.

Telecom only block port 25, Ray is correct in this case because the the OP posted details showing the problem is between the external smtp server they are using (bishamon.wiredns.net) and the receiving mail servers for the domain names they are sending to.

I agree with the advice to change to a different mail provider.

Disrespective:

but I was more confused when emails to only a couple of addresses failed from the mail.archwksp settings.

99% of all email works fine, it's just to these addresses that it fails.

99% OK...
sounds like a spam filter issue at the receiving end. Or just a temp outage at the time you sent those emails
or, mail.archwksp....  might be on a blacklist

on the bosses laptop, change smtp to
(from telecoms help page)
For Outgoing SMTP:
Type send.xtra.co.nz for Server hostnameSelect 465 for Port, SSL/TLS for SSL and Normal Password for Authentication
make sure you tick the box requiring password for sending when setting this up.

Maybe that is the case with the cheap low quality hosts, but I haven't had had problems with blacklistings from my experience with any web hosts. But you do get what you pay for, and the less you pay the less they have to pay staff to  monitor them, and the more likely spammers will signup to their services to use them for spamming/abuse. I find the the main providers who end up on blacklists are the ISPs, and they are very slow at resolving the problem. I would never host a business email account with an ISP again, and I have used quite a few differnet ISPs, and all of their email systems weren't great.

I use HostGator, who are quite reputable. Their web hosting's good, but email hosting isn't always great. Because they have so many servers that each do email, rather than one email server that they all use, servers can end up on spam blacklists. It's not common, but it does happen sometimes.

I've found AuthSMTP is just more reliable for sending email.

Yes I believe they are reputable, but they are still a cheap provider. Some recent reviews on them that I have read haven't been so good though http://forums.hostgator.com/customer-reviews-f16.html , and I believe they were sold quite recently.  If I was looking for cheap US hosting, they would still probably be in my top few that I would choose, but I would need to factor in the price of hosting email elsewhere.
There are all sorts of different types and configurations of hosting, but I believe cpanel hosting is usually all hosted on a  single server with all the other services like websites and databases, so possibly a higher risk of being blacklisted.
The problem is that some hosts, (I don't know about them though) is that they allow people to automatically signup, without someone manually checking that the person is legitimate. Then the server gets abused if a spammer signs up, which causes it to be blacklisted, affecting all customers.

They have everything on each server, mysql, database, apache, etc. The signup process isn't automated though, and they monitor the servers.

They have perhaps 20 negative reviews there for the past 6 months. Given they host 9 million domains, not so bad. my experience has been good, hosting 20 domains there, 2M hits per month.

Last time I look at their reviews site, it didn't have any negative reviews, or only a very few. But I agree that the numbers maybe only a small percentage. But many will be resellers, who host perhaps a few hundred websites. Those resellers may themselves use automated hosting signup systems, which then get abused.
But you were saying that you were having email problems, and have to use a third party. I haven't had  problems with email with the hosts I use, although at least one of them have dedicated email servers for the email and that may help.

I didn't start the thread, that was disrespective. I haven't had email problems since I started using AuthSMTP, even before that it was generally not too bad. Auth just gets me to the hotmail inboxes of my customers more reliably, rather than the spam folders.

Was the problem due to their servers mailserver IP being on blacklists eg. the ones you can see on mxtoolbox.com? Some of these free email providers like yahoo and hotmail I have found will often put legit mail into junkmail anyway without much of a reason.
