nathan: The OP doesn't like Outlook for home use

I wasn't saying use outlook, but use desktop search, it can still index mail - just need to access it from a different location :)

Swap to Gmail.  If you can't find something you're after, at least then, you could ask the NSA, as they'll also be trawling your emails

I already use gmail, but I don't trust google enough to have my entire email archive and make it permanently available. Service can be cut off at any time.

As i have pointed out, and others,.....use gmail for your day to day email.  And use thunderbird to keep a copy of it locally - of gmvault.

Both download the entire email repository locally as a backup of gmail, or to more it to another account, or into another provider.

This covers you for the "service may be cut off an any time"

I guess I could copy the GB or so into Gmail, then back that up.

I'm trailing MailVault, which seems effective. If that doesn't work I'll give the gmail idea a shot, thanks all.
