Most PCIx cards can negotiate for a number of channels that is lower than the physical slot size.

You probably cannot physically plug an X2 card into an X1 slot but you could try using one of the X1-X16 riser cables that the scrypt coin miners go for when they want to plug their stack of Radeons into X1 slots.

Yeah, I could have sworn I saw a video at some point demoing plugging larger slot cards into smaller slots (where the smaller slot had an "open back" on certain mobos so the large card can fit in)

But one other thing occasionally I'm surprised people don't know is that you can plug a lower slot pcie card into larger pcie slots. (x2, x4 into x8, etc) I suspect the OP knows this but was wondering.

The board I have available has 1 16x, 1 16x which is really is a 8x and 2 1x slots. The 16x has a video card and the 8x has a multi port land card that is 4x I think. I can't really put a full atx board in ad I have modded the case for drives at the bottom where a full atx board would extend to. I've not seen a microatx board with more 16x slots than 2 of them

edit: i mistakenly listed the 2 not 4 port....

Those are PCI cards, it appears that the OP is looking for PCI Express cards. (Given that he reports that he has an X1 slot.)

Also, those are Sata 1 only so they are slower and do not have NCQ.

ahh - good point - and i am a numpty - as it turns out i did get the 2 port pci-e versions:

cheap at $12 and have worked well - that said i might have to look at some of the cards others have listed for me next build :)

Is that 4 port one a native PCI-e chip or is it hiding behind a bridge to make it old PCI - that picture at http://www.aliexpress.com/item/new-PCI-E-express-1X-to-4-ports-SATA-serial-ATA-raid-card-adapter-SIL3124/530380967.html looks like it has something else under the heat sink, and there is also the fact that the listed chipset is a PCI one on silicon images website.

I have had no end of trouble with a previous video capture card that had a bridge on it instead of being a real PCIe device - very high CPU load compared to the same chipset in a native PCI form in the same comouter.
