Looks like the font-smoothing thing prefers certain fonts over others. I've had a quick blat around the net and some sites look really good (of course the Apple site does) whilst others look heinous. Bold fonts seem to take a hammering. I'm using a 19" LCD and it looks like the "Light" rendering may be the best for me. Is this how people using Macs see the net?

Also, Safari doesn't play nice with Windows Live - whether it be the personalised Live home or even Spaces. It drops your formatting and personalised settings.

If you're TabletPC or UMPC user, do be prepared to put up with on-screen TIP as Safari doesn't use the standard Windows window framework, so the TIP does not know how to interact with the text box or text area etc. This is reported on GottaBeMobile. So for the time being, if you're UMPC/TabletPC users, it won't be much joy to use Safari on regular basis.

For reference, Firefox and Opera doesn't automatically do floating TIP either, but you are able to activate TIP and use writing or character pad and on-screen keyboard, however the same cannot be said for Safari.

So for the time being, IE7 and Firefox 2 for my UMPC (XP/Vista).

And really, what benefit would one achieve if using Safari instead of Firefox for example? Isn't Safari a browser with less adherence to standards than Firefox?

Exactly... the reports I read indicated that Safari is all talk but little show. And their ACID2 test seems more and more tweaked and fabricated than an actual real world significant of a typically constructed website. Beside, the technique and HTML structure you use in ACID2 test isn't real world equivalent... Who would make a site based on that sphagetti HTML structure? ACID2 is to test how W3C and CSS support they have, and we know with any standards out there, you can never achieve full 100% standards, the best is close to that and yet with some proprietary approach too.

I don't buy ACID2 test, smart coding and innovative technique to present your website with best CSS technique that you can do without exploiting any hack will suffice and stretch long way, and more importantly, upskill to match the ever-changing CSS update, and constant maintenance. Don't think for a moment, once you done a site with all-holy-css and be done with it... it doesn't work that way!

Compliance is a highly disputed subject and is highly dependent on which side of the fence you want to lean on.

In my personal opinion - I like Safari, its light, quick, and relatively good at rendering pages. The only downside is lack of add-on functionality which at the moment goes to Firefox with its excellent add on system, however firefox suffers from problems of its own like bloat, lack of speed (particularly on mac os x), and stability issues (namely addons).
