nathan: if you have a video card that supports the mDP1.2 MST for daisychaining but don't have the monitors that support it you can also buy a MST hub and use that between the monitors and PC.

And that's the new thing I have learned today.  :)

nathan: Personally I don't find USB2 / USB3 DisplayLink particularly reliable or stable

That's my experience as well, though I think they are getting better (like early WinModems - they were horrible when first released). I don't buy or encourage them, but have them handed to me to troubleshoot not infrequently.  Trickier operations like 'what to do if the user closes their laptop lid but power settings tell me to not go to sleep' are not always handled the way use user would like.

Yeah unreliable here too.
They were built into a few cheap laptop docking stations a few years ago.
I use one on my laptop for running a VGA projector, and they will run basic video tasks but they do use the CPU alot more and I wouldnt bother with any 3d graphics, games or rendering work.

Youtube full screen flash video is the best I have really got out of them.

However great for office applications like excel

Oh I just have found my motherboard has a half-length mini Pci-e slot. I have comes accross these in my searches:

That's giving me another PCI-E slot (albeit 1x which should be fine)? The chassis has a 2nd mounting spot for an addon card but I would have to modify the bracket as it would be loose-as. Technically though. Any reason for this not to work?
