ping182nz: My question was related to how they stream or how they deliver their content... not what quality they deliver it at...

All the tools that used to work for me to download and watch later have stopped working.

i.e. StreamTransport ( http://www.streamtransport.com/web-video-downloader/) or GetFLV (www.getflv.net) or TubeDigger (http://www.tubedigger.com/)

All the programs now just crash when trying to detect and download the stream...

Which browser are you using?

I'm surprised you were able to download content from TVNZ previously.
I would imagine that TVNZ are just like TV3 in the regard that they will be using something like RTMPE or RTMPS to encrypt their streams to prevent video grabbers from being able to download their content. This is usually a condition of content providers providing them with content to stop it being pirated.
However, if you have been able to download content previously then perhaps they were not using it but now are.

oh, I see . . . Stream Transport is a standalone application that is supposed to overcome RTMP encryption.
I tested it on TV3 and it worked fine (surprisingly)
I'm unable to test it on TVNZ as I don't live in NZ and 100% of their content is geoblocked.
I would suggest that if this application still works for you on TV3 but crashes on TVNZ then they probably have made some encryption changes (but that is just a guess).

It seems like not too long ago their service provider switched to RTMPE instead of the solution they had previously, which looks like they were using Progressive Streaming (also known as Progressive Downloading).

They use BrightCove to power their On Demand systems. Here's some info about how they do streaming for their content if you want some insight.

EDIT:

MediaWorks (TV3, FOUR, etc) use their own Wowza streaming server and allow HLS which means if you spend enough time figuring out their URL's then you can download all of their content.

As a side note, MediaWorks have their content maxed out at 700kbps which is less than half the quality of TVNZ so it probably wouldn't be worth the time and effort.

Which operating system are you using? I'm guessing Win7? Try both versions of StreamTransport.

Also try running it in administrator mode. I've tried it but it keeps crashing, Win8.1 and IE11.

I have tried Win 7 and Win 8.1 , and both ie 10 and 11... All seem to crash streamtransport, getflv and tubdigger... :( I always run these as administrator :)

If you are comfortable with terminal applications then you could give rtmpdump a try. I'm sure it's available for windows.

Yes, I could give that a go, but i cannot find the stream url... i.e. RTMP://

I have tried using the sniffer tools, but cannot seem to find it...

You shouldn't need to know the stream url. You just need to get your firewall to redirect all rtmp traffic to a specific port.
I haven't used rtmpdump for a long time but you should be able to find some guides on google.

edit: here is a good guide for linux - you'd need to work out the equivalent commands for windows
