I built the one I'm using now. Gigabyte K8ns pro MoBo, AMD 64 3000+ CPU, 1.5 gig RAM, Nvidia Geforce fx 5200 Video card, Lite-on cdr/w/dvd/r, Pioneer dvd r/w. 80gig Seagate HD, 320gig hd 400w power supply (can't remember make off hand), CMV 17"lcd. A4 Tech wireless keyboard and mouse. about $1600 all up.
Went into Supercheap and chose all the parts, with some advice regarding value for money, reliability etc. took home a pile of boxes, Ehhhh, it were like Christmas. took about an hour to assemble and fire up. The hardest thing was installing Windoze. It all runs nicely. I output the second monitor (TV Out) to a Panasonic 27" LCD in the living room and control it via the wireless keyboard. I would recommend the a project like this to anyone who likes to have a flexible and robust system. It's also a great deal of fun and satisfaction plus it takes a lot of the "mystery" out of computers. The confidence gained can save hours of frustration when something goes wrong.
I would also recommend a metal box to help eliminate static probs.
Cheers. :)
