freitasm: Sorry folks, but why would anyone download iTunes if not from the Apple site? PCs are a vital parts of today's life. It should be treated with care - and installing things from CNET and other sites is not treating it with care.

Not everybody coming here for help come equipped with years and years of IT experience. Just sayin'.

I know very well the profile of our visitors, thanks. It's part of the job.

But this is common sense that people have been hammering over the last fifteen years - do not open attachments sent from people you don't know; do not open attachments you didn't ask for even from people you know; do not install anything you did not explicitly request; download from the sources; do not install toolbars and add-ons; do not install pirated software; do not install software that just pop up after visiting a website...

All these things are communicated daily by news organisations, friends, PC retailers, even ISPs. It's such a problem that even Spark offers a free McAfee Security Suite to their customers.

I am the "go to support guy" for my inlaws. They know too well that I won't touch their PCs to fix anything if they download and install any software without either checking with me first or making sure it's a download they initiate from the original site. They know I won't fix things if they open attachments from a Nigerian Prince about an invoice they have not paid to get their (unsolicited) FEDEX shipment released from customs. So they don't.

It's all about educating users and that's why I pointed this out earlier in this thread. Everyone should help by educating their "users" (relatives and friends).

I couldn't agree with you more freitasm I have tried to educate most of my family in safe browsing and common sense but some still manage to get it screwed up regardless and those ones get charged a fee for me to repair the damage it's a good incentive for them to become more vigilant and usually works after the second time

I didn't mean to take a shot at you if that's what you think, Mauricio. I was just a little nonplussed that your post got more +1's than Jase2985's post, which is the one that actually provided a helpful solution to the original post. But that's to be expected I suppose, this is Geekzone after all. :P

Well actually it was my question which seemed to upset him. The first comment he wrote was a reprimand for posting in the wrong place. I thought that was a bit rude because I looked all over the index and was totally confused with so many choices and thought the one I chose was OK. Then he wrote a rather arrogant rant at me for updating a virus. Gee. I have used this site for help before and people have been very kind. Not sure if I will ask here again. He is obviously over his job or having a rotten time in his life. Thanks for picking up on this. I am definitely not a geek!

Wow. I would recommend you read my first reply again - I never said anything about not being posted in the correct forum. And the rant was aimed at EVERYONE, not only yourself, although I am sure it applies.

I was attacked on my Laptop over the weekend, this includes Internet Explorer not responding even though it is not launched, plus slow start-up and malware, Malwarebytes and other good programmes do the trick and if in doubt use System Restore to go back to an earlier point before the malware attacks.
