I can run a test for you - have a HP Microserver with a few TB drives at home. But it won't show your error - only prove mine is working ok.

It will take a few hours, will post later.

Thanks Mauricio. Don't go to too much trouble - just do a couple of copies and see what happens.

What could be interesting is putting my disks into your server to test. I will possibly do that at another friends house tonight though, he lives the other end of JV.

timmmay:

Maybe you can help me understand why you think copying from the SSD to the SSD and having a failure would suggest I should't replace the computer?

I said the other way around, if it DOESNT fail using just the samsung, then i wouldnt replace the machine yet, if it can successfully copy files onto a single hard drive without any problems with no other drives attached the likely hood of one of your other drives hardware and or firmware/software causing this has increased by a much larger margin, this is also based on all the testing you have done with prime95 and memtest to verify cpu/motherboard/ram is OK

sometimes when you have problems like this, you just have to follow the process of elimination to get down to the faulty part

Its unlikely to be the PSU, but if you have a spare it is worth swapping to atleast rule it out.

i have alot of experience with building/fixing computers if you want to PM me i can dial in via teamviewer and check some things out.

Ah ok, that makes more sense. As I said above a test that writes to the drive then reads from it to verify fails CRC, when everything else is plugged in. I'll unplug everything else tonight and try it on its own though.

I don't have a spare PSU - maybe Mauricio has one laying around? I have a friend with completely separate hardware, my previous build, that I can use for testing though.

May take you up on the offer to remote in. I'm fairly experienced but I've been looking at it too long and a second set of eyes can help. I'll do some more tests first to get more information.

Sorry, no spares.

Happy to chuck the drive on the HP box and copy stuff to it...

Thanks M, I'll likely try at a friends house first to save you the trouble if I can.

Assume you done the following?

Latest Motherboard BIOS?
Any firmware revsions available for your hard drives?
Latest Chipset/Motherboard Drivers

Is your motherboard on ACHI or IDE mode ?

Does Samsung Magician report the SMART as ALL OK for the SSD?

have you used another tool to get the smart status from your other drives? (even if this says all OK doesnt mean it is) but if it does have a failure than you can be sure that is correct

BIOS - I'll check it. Given the same problem happened with old motherboard (different chipset) it's probably not that.
Hard drive firmware - I'll check. Problem occurs with multiple types of disks, including a software RAID system, so it's probably not that.
Drivers - Windows auto installed everything. I can double check though.
Motherboard is in ACHI mode.
Samsung Magician reports all OK. I have another tool, Crystal Disk Info, which was reporting SMART all ok last time I checked but not sure it's installed right now. I'll check that, thanks.

I really think it's a central component that's failed, perhaps the CPU, though I will go through all these diagnostics including using one drive at a time.

Probably not - dont know if you replaced it with the exact same model or something different, update it anyway as you always should. Did you reinstall Windows when you replaced the motherboard?

1 bad drive can cause lots of problems on the system

Drivers - Windows auto installed everything. I can double check though.

You should go to the motherboard manufactures website and install the drivers for your motherboard

unlikely CPU, they very rarely fail, ive sold probably 400+ CPUs in machines ive sold and only ever had 1 faulty one, +  you already tortured it using prime95 and it didnt fail

download this app, speedfan from http://www.almico.com/sfscreenshots.php - it has a smart section for hard drives, post some screenshots of the smart section for each hard drive, it has a nice little fitness and performance indicator on it
as well.

I'll definitely be following your recommendations, thanks Dan. True about CPUs rarely failing, or at least people rarely noticing CPUs failing. Could be a minor structural flaw in this CPU, but that's not really all that likely.

I also use open hardware monitor mostly for temperatures (all very low), not sure if it does smart but it hasn't complained about anything.

D**n computer. I'll give it a couple more days to try to track this down before I replace the whole thing.

One other thing you might want to consider, are the motherboard, drives and case all earthed/grounded nicely ?

I had an issue many many moons ago where a friend was having poor disk performance, looking in the case the motherboard was only attached to the case by plastic posts, and the drives were screwed to their frame with plastic washers between the drives and the metal work.  After I rebuilt it with the board screwed to the metal posts and the drives touching the metal drive cages all the problems went away.

Might be worth checking it out  ?

Well SSDs are plastic. The CoolerMaster mounting system electrically isolates the drives, so they're not isolated via the case. If drives really need to be grounded I think that's done via the power connector. Thanks for the idea but I suspect it's a red herring.

I have an old box you can use for testing. It's an old XP box but it has SATA and you could always rip the power supply out of it.

I was going to take it to a recycling place so you can have it for nothing. I'm in Lower Hutt.
