richms: And they will decline that request on a consumer level drive. They recondition them for the replacements etc so it's not a worthless item they are getting back.

The way I read the OP, this isn't the manufacturer warranty, its a retailer's extended warranty. So I think its worth a go.

1101: Im sure WD & Seagate will have systems in place to ensure the safety of of any data on drives sent back to them.

The most important content on that webpage is:

"Seagate has coordinated with the US National Security Agency (NSA)"

That tells me all that I need to know.

Walks into store: "I want a warranty replacement, but Im not going to hand over the faulty unit"
cant imagine that ever working.

Not to mention what a 100% con job 'extended warranties' are...but thats another topic
