kiwis: I can't run Apps that are installed on my main machine

That is because those apps are installed on the main machine not your client machines!

I recommend against sharing "Program Files" or "Program Files(x86)", not normally a recipe for success.

Either install those apps on the client machine to run them there, or use a remote desktop to login to the other machine.

use a program like teamviewer or splashtop so you can login to the other computer and run what ever you want to run, the apps will only run on the computer they are installed on.

both have mobile apps, and team viewer allows you to connect from anywhere in the world.

Just remember to set as strong a password as you can remember, Teamviewer and similar apps that allow remote access into your computer are a security concern, so probably not the best thing for a novice computer user to use.

if you log out or close the program. but then it defeats the purpose of being able to remotely control a computer if you have to get up and open the program to use it.

Bittorrent Sync is way easier than windows shares.

I second the earlier recommendation to get a NAS.

A cheap twin-bay one will cost you circa $200, plus the cost of some drives. Cheap, low power consumption, and easy configure with the access permissions you want etc.

Drive mirroring should mean that you don't lose documents if a drive fails. Last time I looked you can also get features like USB ports with one-click backups to USB drives etc as well. Or set up a scheduled backup to Dropbox or similar. Remember, although they are fault-tolerant compared to a single drive, RAID is not a backup!

Given windows sharing consists of right clicking a single folder and setting permissions how could anything else be simpler??
