Yep, I go through a rechargeable battery every 3-4 days, I just find it alot easier on my wrist because of the tracking, making the battery life worth it.
I imagine the surface you are working on makes a difference, I don't like a mouse pad personally.

Lizard1977: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.  Dormant mischievous spirits are spirits nonetheless.  Time to shell out for the latest model (MX Master).  8 years isn't too bad I guess for the little rodent.  It's been a fantastic mouse, but it sounds like the MX Master fixes the few quirks the Revolution had.

Received a MX Master last week for review. It's a seriously good mouse. The buit-in battery works so much better than using AA or rechargeable AA batteries, and working with both Unifying receiver or Bluetooth makes a big difference - Bluetooth FTW!

Thanks Freitasm.  I saw a review on Gizmodo back in April which more or less sold me on it.  The things I love about the Revolution are the back/forwards buttons (much easier for browsing/folder navigation) and the thumb wheel which I used to use for app switching but now use for volume control.  It's a nice size, good battery life (though diminishing on an 8yr+ mouse, and really comfortable to use.  The things I didn't like were it's glitchiness when the battery started to run low (it stopped tracking/transmitting accurately), and the fact you had to park it up to recharge.  The Master seems to solve both of these with improved tracking and a USB cable charger.  The DPI switching will be a bonus, as will be the ability to pair three separate devices over both bluetooth and USB receiver (meaning it can work with my Surface as well as my desktop, at a button push).  The only thing that's making me hesitate is the placement of the back/forwards buttons - I prefer them in line, slightly further forward, rather than set back and stacked like they are in the Master.  However, I haven't been able to play with one to test how much of an issue it will be - there aren't any on display in Palmerston North that I'm aware of, so I may just have to take a punt and live with it as best I can.  I'm also liking the fact that it looks like NZ stocks were purchased before the interest rate went up, and you can now get it much cheaper here in NZ than it would cost to buy through Amazon.

Back in the day, I had a colleague with a VCR that began to exhibit strange picture breakups when inserting tapes. He then realised that any tape he inserted came out with some sort of sticky substance covering the tape. Turns out it was the perfect place for his toddler to "post" an ice block.

Just to close this thread off:

1. The mouse is working now (though as stated above, not sure for how long.  One week on, and all good so far!)
2. The wheel button isn't working though.  However, I installed UberOptions to allow me to remap the wheel button to the Search button on the top of the mouse.  Full functionality restored!

I still ordered the MX Master, as Noel Leeming had a 25% discount which brought it down to a very reasonable $112.  Just have to wait for the stock to arrive in-store.  In the meantime, I'm using the old mouse at work (so much more productive than the bog standard HP mouse), and using a Logitech trackpad at home until the Master arrives.

"The wheel button isn't working though."

The mouse is not working now then. You have a workaround but the mouse is still stuffed.

MX Master arrived yesterday.  First impressions are it's a very nice mouse indeed.  Initially, I was put out when the new supporting software (Logitech Options, instead of Setpoint) seemed to offer next to no customisation of the button mapping.  I went to bed feeling indignant at having such a crippled device.  But I had another look this morning and found you can remap all the buttons to almost any function (even a keystroke macro) except for the left/right click (which you can swap if need be). It doesn't have quite the same flexibility as the old Revolution (you can't set application specific settings), but that doesn't bother me too much as I never really used that side of things.

It's got a nice feel, good size for my hand, and even the back/forwards buttons on the side aren't too difficult to reach.  Only one minor gripe - the "gesture" button on the thumb rest takes a bit of extra dexterity to push, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.  Loving the ability to pair up to three PCs via bluetooth and/or USB receiver.

I've gone back to corded mice, as sick of batteries that keep failing, and interference. Got a dell laser mouse which is weighted inside, and that is actually made by Logitech. Logitech do make the best mice.

Its well known that babies can do things to computers that even the professionals cant fix!  This includes breaking hardware, causing viruses, corrupt hard drives, large purchases from Amazon and winning bids on Auctions on trademe!  Keep that baby well away from the computer!  :)

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I've found the Microsoft Wiress Desktop 800 combo to be good. It's only $50 and sometimes as cheap as $25, it's reliable, and the batteries (AA and AAA) typically last about a year.

Cats are the same.  They have killed a number of my external hard drives, as they love to sit on them as they are warm.

I have a very similar ms mouse, and it doesn't feel good in the hand, and too light. I also find the wheels on Microsoft mice swell up and then stick to the sides, meaning it is hard to rotate. I have a Microsoft laser muse too, and the rubber wheel has gone all sticky over time, as the rubber has broken down. I have gone through many mice over the years, and Logitech have always been the best.
