Upgrade your CPU to the base model i5.

Otherwise good choices.

If you can wiggle it, I'd really recommend going for the i5 option - the 2 extra cores are well worth the additional spend. Other than that? Nothing much wrong with what you're looking at.

huxtable: Hmmm... having found some recommendations on any forum, could anyone offer their thoughts on the following:

  • CPU : Intel i5 4460 - $275
  • Motherboard : Asus H81M-E - $90
  • RAM : 8GB Crucial DDR3 1600MHZ CL11 - $100

If I could get a CPU/Mobo/RAM combo for under $500, I'd be pretty stoked. Any thoughts? Wouldn't be any issues with my existing Case/GFX/SSD etc?

Justgoing back to the beginning - if win 10 is killed your system it shouldn't. I ran it fine on a dual core laptop 8 years old with 2gb ram. In fact it wsa faster than windows 7 on that thing.

Did you clean install? Sounds like your progressive updating has progressively brought all the excess baggage across. Clean install when you've updated the other bits.

No, I'm not sure why they're showing as a hyperlink! Just all straight from Computer Lounge though.

To be honest my PC was a drag before I installed Win10. But yip certainly intending to do a full re-format of the SSD and completely clean install.

OK, definitely seems like the i5 is being recommended ahead of the i3 6100. I had been looking at comparisons and to my untrained eye it seemed like the i3 6100 would likely offer potentially better practical performance at much better value?

I guess I could go the i5, but at about $100 dearer will mean I'll have to pass on getting a new HDD for now, and save for that post-xmas.

Thanks for the links Athlonite, although those i5 combo components are slightly cheaper through Computer Lounge and I was keen to get through CL if possible as they've been great in the past.

I think that the i3 is probably the better deal given your budget constraints:
+ better memory bandwidth with a boost in graphics performance
+ the graphics performance will be better anyway http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=3220&gid2=1438&compare=intel-hd-graphics-530-desktop-vs-intel-hd-graphics-4600-desktop
+ at least as good overall CPU performance but
- worse multithread performance http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/414/Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100_vs_Intel_Core_i5_i5-4460.html

Just saw the Trade Me deal which would be better than both the i3-6100 and the i5-4460 if you wanted to spend the extra $100 or so:
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/410/Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100_vs_Intel_Core_i5_i5-6400.html

The i3 still gives more bang for your buck.

The Core i3 is faster on paper in single threaded tasks, with the clockspeed advantage it has. But most things that you'll run into performance issues on (i.e. modern, taxing things) are multi-threaded and able to use the speed offered by all 4 cores, meaning that, basically, the i3 can do 2 things really fast, or 4 things, 2 of which can be really fast and 2 of which can use the "leftovers", while the i5 can just do 4 things really fast outright, although not quite as fast is the i3.

If you want to eek out more speed from the i5, supposedly Overclocking for Skylake chips is coming for non-K parts, although I think you'll want a relatively decent 170 motherboard to do that, rather than a 150 motherboard. All these things might bump your costs a bit more, but they give you a heckuvalot more longevity. As for the graphical advantages, they're moot if you have a discrete card (which your 660 ti certainly is). Honestly, if you can grit your teeth and hold out a little longer, I'd recommend picking up the i5 6600k, and a third party cooler (as they don't come with one stock) - it'll last you the longest of this line, and when it gets a bit outdated, you can still overclock the hell out of it to get a bit more power.

Yeah, I forgot about the graphics card.

Yeah I know you can get them cheaper they were just for ideas so good luck with what ever setup you go for I'm sure it'll be better than what you have now

Gahh, this always happens - end up wanting bigger and better! 😁

Now I'm actually looking at going all the way up to i5 6500, to eek the most out of $700 budget - I can get that, mobo, RAM and 1TB HDD for $700 - current PSU will tide me over until after xmas (it's 620W but just don't want to rely on it forever due to its age).

Anyone going to talk me out of i5 6500?i feel like it's only $40 more than 6400 and will at least give clearly better performance than i3 and won't need upgraded for a good long while...

Thanks again for assistance everyone .

6600k can be had for $385 from playtech at the moment, but has no pack in cooler. If you can stretch, but the 6500 is definitely a solid pick. There's just always better.
