JimmyH: So what are people using for large backup sets then?

I have about 9TB on my RAID array at the moment (RAID5 NAS) replicated to USB hard drives. Data seems to grows at 1-2TB a year. Mostly media, so once it hits the NAS it never changes, and about 100GB of data that changes frequently.

Having lost a couple of USB drives over recent years, I'm no longer too keen on USB drives as a backup option, despite using this option at present.

The two options I'm thinking of are 50GB dual-layer blurays (Verbatims can be landed for about $3.50 each = circa $70 per TB), or picking up a second hand LTO-4 tape drive.

That's something I wonder about too. My solution is to never have a set of data larger than the largest hard drive I can buy, and I buy top quality drives and put them into my own enclosures.

I've looked into tape but it's pretty expensive. Blu Ray writes seem to be $150 or so, or US$40 from amazon. Media are around $12 bought from ascent - you obviously want the best quality, but I see you can get them for US$2 for 50GB or US$.50 - $1 for 25GB disks. Not a bad plan actually, all my data is on hard drives, having a second format seems quite sensible.

Anyone got opinions on blu ray reliability, especially over multiple years?

Have a look at M-Disc they do a range of long term DVD and Blu-ray media that is supposed to have a long lifespan.

I have all of my data on a 4 disk RAID 5 that is controlled by a RAID card and then everything is also backed up to a NAS box.

Seeing we're on this bandwagon - don't forget to keep version backups -- think what happens if a document gets corrupted and you don't discover the corruption till months later.
