I would interpret that to mean a discussion of OS versions was acceptable.

Also, I don't think Timmmay was talking about Windows versions just to annoy you.

I think it was a genuine attempt to help.

I think you really need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. You asked for suggestions about motherboards, I gave the best advice I have - to buy one of the two brands I recommended, and the cheapest option that'll do the job. The expensive ones tend to be huge overkill for most. I also suggested a modern operating system, which will take better advantage of your hardware and have better software compatibility, which did turn into a discussion. Threads almost never stay 100% on topic, and given that you said "almost certainly" it wasn't decided, so it would be fair to assume you were interested in input.

If you don't want discussion and aren't prepared for things to not be 100% on topic I think you'd be best staying off forums, rather than turning into the forum grump.

Exactly. Its a discussion forum. We discuss . If only yes/no type answers were allowed , the forum would die.

And to be fair to Timmmay, he didnt take it off topic, he replied to someone elses OS post/comment (as well as answering your question)

This irks me: complaining that people offer advice, on advice forums. And , those answering the question will usually know more than those asking.
Sure , threads go off track & often people misread the question, but on they other hand those answering are taking the time to try & help out.

"The OS will be, definitely and incontrovertibly, Windows 7. Because there is no way that I will entertain Windows 10. Unless M$ cuts out the compulsory automatic updates. Which appears to be unlikely."

But I have a niggling feeling that this statement would certainly have caused the discussion to veer off into areas that had no bearing on my original question.

However, I could be wrong: it's happened once or twice. :-)

While all of the Mac guys sit in the corner with their nice shiny computers......

Back to the OP I would recommend and Asus board and Asus HyperX memory, buy the most ram you can afford.

When thing I don't recall you mentioning is a monitor, get something nice that has quick specs for gaming, they are pricey but worth it.

Yeah, I settled on an Asus Z170M-Plus mobo. It has OC capabilities I probably won't use, but its other features suit me.

Re RAM, I'll just run with the 2 x 8GB Ripjaws 4 series I'd earlier selected. This item was considerably less costly than 16GB of other brands\models and I figured that I wouldn't see much of a performance difference, seeing as how my PC usage is fairly low-key.

Re the monitor, my Asus 24" PA248Q 16:10 looks pretty good, and while the proposed new system could support a screen with much higher res, I can't afford it ATM.
