That approach may make sense with a cheap domestic "disposable" UPS. They are not built to last.

It makes less sense with a business-grade device, with better build quality, and costing well over $1,000.

Yes, it was quite expensive at the time, back when I had my own disposable income.

I have been advised this by two vendors and an agency that does ups maintenance.

You don't put a price on the value of the ups - you put a price on the value of the equipment and business continuity it's protecting.

Thats a fairly simple equation. A WHS2011 built from spare parts, for personal not business use. All data also backed up to external drives. Monetary value is sod all.
Just my time really in building a new one if it got fried.
Just waiting to hear back from jeffnz now.

btw, that ups uses two 12v18ah sla batteries which can be picked up cheaply enough, so long as you get ones that allow the fuse link to be connected between the two when placed side by side.

interesting as we use the New Zealand Distributor and Service Agent for Eaton Power Quality Powerware UPS products to service our UPS and replace the batteries, and we have 4+ UPS that range from 1200va to 4500va and they have never once mentioned replacing them when they get serviced. I spoke at length with the technicians when they visit about the UPS and the issues we had, which was inlet power supply related (think 1970's ship that runs off generators that like to brown out often)

We just load test the UPS once a year and confirm the batteries operate to spec.

Ive got 3 APC ups here at home and apart from a battery change every 4 years or so no issues.

Have also done the same with dynamix ones but they are a bit harder to replace the batteries. again no issues.

Its probably a ploy on their part to get more UPS sales

I use a few APC UPSs. Tested batteries when they reached the end of life with my Battery Analysers - no good. Tried to rejuvenate with my Battery Desulfator - no luck.
