McAfee, Even the original owner/creator of Mcafee publicly states thats now rubbish (search for his youtube vid to see his opinion on it)

Just saying, I wouldnt want anyone to use sub-par AV programs based on whats been recommended here :-)

That's why I suggested teaming it with Malware Bytes. The antivirus part works very well indeed. If you had both you'd be well covered. But obviously the old adage of "you get what you pay for" applies.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition. It's well rated for both anti-virus capabilities and performance. I moved from Avira after getting really frustrated with their updates endlessly necessitating PC restarts and the endless nagging to do so.

I'd never heard of that one - it looks really good. If McAffee is as bad as everyone says it is, I might have to switch.

Bit Defender looks good, I might try it out. Avast hasn't bugged me for a few days so it's still there.

I installed Avira today, it found 8 viruses that Avast hadn't found - or at least hadn't mentioned recently. So that was a good move. One was a virus in a backup of my phone, so I installed Avira on Android, but it just locked up constantly, so I'm trying eset. Not too bothered about phone really, if it gets a virus I'll just wipe it and start again, and I don't keep anything on it that would really bother me to release.

Tried Avira and then Avast on a 1ghz/2gb lap today. Both slowed desktop time to appear and usabilty noticeably. Went back to an ESET trial instead. Maybe will try some others in future.

Did not try AVG, I've seen it bog a different machine (dual core but but low ram) with animated notifications done badly.

ESET so far seems the best for low resource scenarios. Keen to hear any other experience on that scenario.

Avira also has annoying pop-ups, but I guess all the free ones do these days. I may end up buying something just to stop the nagging, which is the whole point of them. I didn't notice the machine slowing down at all with Avira or Avast, but I have SSDs and an i7 and I don't really load the machine up much.

Bitdefender has no annoying popups or forced restarts. It's truly fantastic.

Yesterday I Installed BitDefender Free on that low power machine I mentioned earlier. For startup and UI it is easily the best I have tried so far for that machine.

In operation I'm feeling it is slowing things in JIT scanning just a tad more than paid ESET hopefully not an issue in practice.

After install there was a page comparing BitDefender 2013 detection scores with some other products. 2013?

I tried to download BitDefender Free today. When you go to the page on their website for the free version it just forwards you back to the home page. They really don't seem to want to let you get the free version, so I'll stay with Avira for now.
