Yep, I got one on my skylake i5-6500, and have overclocked it from 3.2 Ghz to 4.48 Ghz. Has been stable for 4 months now, no issues. I cant justify buying an i7-6700k because well, im a gamer and that chip I got is fine for games. If i were video editing or doing something more intense then yeh I would go i7.

EDIT: if you end up selling a sandy bridge i5 or i7 chip I may be interested.

Heatsink arrived, hopefully have time over the long weekend to install it and start playing around. Thanks for you help so far

Before fitting the new heatsink thought I would get some baseline temperature readings.

After booting and just idling the temp was 65, light use would go straight away up to about 72-75, under load (game or Prime95) would almost immediately go to 98 and just stay there. Noticed the CPU multiplier would never go above x16 for a core speed of only 1600 MHz. So I'm guess because the temps were running so high that it was throttling back?

is that with the stock heatsink? or none at all?

im idling around 30degc and with a quick 15min prime 95 stress test its sitting 64 degrees with the case fans on low

That was with the stock, but when I removed it the thermal grease stuff was pretty much dry. Also the entire heat sink felt loose.

Now got the Hyper 212 on and temps idle at about 35 then going into the 40s under load.

Start off with just the multiplier for now. You may need to increase the voltage if it becomes unstable. Read a guide on overclockers.net

Thanks, I've been reading the guides and confused by what I need to change to 'increase the voltage'. Is that changing the "Dynamic Vcore (DVID)"? The options are auto, normal and then plus or minus incremental amounts. So I change this to something like +0.10?

I just recently 'overclocked' my 2500k. All I did was change the multiplier from 33 to 40. Bam! Running 4Ghz. Havent had any issue so far have tested by playing BF1 for a few hours. I am running corsair H60 fan/clooer tho.. (I like the quiet)

Just change the clock multiplier. No other settings. The CPU is unlocked. You need a Z series motherboard. Probably Z97.

What model is your motherboard.
