Dynamic:

Every time (I'm thinking approx 5 times in 10 years), the print quality has been sub-par.  4 times I've replaced the refilled toner with genuine and the issue was sorted.  Once I had to replace the drum unit as well to restore print quality.

I had 6 years in the toner reman industry.
Refilling/re-manufacturing can be done with good results , but they are NEVER as reliable as genuine.
Although, some toner carts are so badly designed or so weird they are too problematic to recycle & just fail .
Even some genuine toner carts had a huge fail rate : judging by the amount of toner left in them.

It comes down to cost to do it properly. Possibly why the Chinese reman imports are so damn awefull.
I recently bought a remanufactured toner for our old LJ5 , one of the easiest to reman . It was a 100% fail (had several issues), must have been a chinese import.

Could check this out, not Brother but 36 month warranty apparently.

If you are using Linux getting a printer that does PostScript or PostScript emulation is a good idea. Why because it just works.

Find out at at this site if there is a Linux PPD(driver) file available for your chosen model;

I have had success approaching commercial printer suppliers for ex lease printers. You can often get a good spec printer for a reasonable price.

Brother MFC-9140CDN here, color, network via ethernet. I've had a it a few years, just about to change to the new toner. Works great. Wouldn't mind one with a feeding scanner.

Was looking to buy one of these, as an upgrade to my basic brother laser. The specs list it having an automatic document feeder - I assumed for scanning. Interested to hear if that's not the case?

Yes, but a single single sided scanner that doesn't flip pages. I was apparently half asleep when I wrote that comment.

I have only found for black and white does generic toner work ok. Anything greyscale or in a colour laser and things go horrid without the correct stuff.

Refilled toner cartridges use to be a goldmine for the company I worked for servicing the banks. I lost count of how many times I'd get a callout for poor print quality. 5 min on site, swap their refilled cartridge to a genuine new, charge a big fat callout fee $$$ :)

We purchased a BROTHER HL1210W from Harvey Normans a couple of weekends back, was $60 and is wireless and setting up on both windows and linux and home was a piece of pis* , Toner's can be got for $19 off of Trade me which have a 1500 page capacity. I guess we have printed out around 500 pages so far and not a single niggle. It just sits in the spare room and prints out when we tell it to.

I've just bought a used HP MFP M277dw colour laserjet for $50 from a buddy.  He said that just the black toner needed replacing, so after putting the printer in the back of my truck, I walked across the road to Warehouse Stationery and paid another $144 for a black toner.  After firing it up and installing the drivers, it turns out that it still prints black text but with some very slight fading, but both cyan and magenta are empty.

So I thought I'd ask for opinions about refills or aftermarket toner, and was pleased to find this thread, although disheartened at probably needing to pay for original toner.  The only upside is that I have found original toner for a lot less than Warehouse Stationery are asking. I have used aftermarket ink in my Canon MB5360 and wouldn't disagree with the 'disappointed' comment I read back down the thread.  Blacks tend to dry out needing a cleaning cycle and two or three print offs to get half reasonably results, and colours tend to show banding.  This was never a problem with the original cartridges.

So thanks for sharing.

I got one of those cheap "essentially free after rebate" Brother HL-1210W printers and refill the toner myself. Printed 2504 pages in a little over a year and still going strong but like it as it is small. I like the fact it doesn't stop printing once it decides the toner is empty. Gets hammered by my sister printing Uni papers. Have got CUPS on a Raspberry Pi for the print server and the printer itself sits on a shelf out of the way on wireless.
