Should we bother with a rugged/shock resistant one if only used at home [note child use] ?
drop it when it 'on' & its history regardless.
Want rugged childproof, then an SSD based USB drive
Cables on brand name usb HD's are generic , however they usually have to be quite short for USB powered drives
Avoid WD Passport , as the drive itself has no sata connector , making data recovery more complicated if everything goes wrong at once
And make sure the USB HD is backup only, not just external file storage. Disconnect when not backing up
