So....I've been offered these by a guy at work for free:

For those playing at home, I currently have a Gigabyte B85M-D3H mobo which is playing up, and a G3258 CPU.

Is it worth swapping these out, even just for the meantime until I raise enough funds for a proper upgrade, or am I really taking a dive in performance across the board?

From what I can tell the G3258 out performs the i7 in single core, but the i7 has 4 cores/8 threads compared with the G3258's 2 cores/2 threads.

Don't make this mistake as i did buying an old loaf of a multi core processor. Most things will only run 1 thread and bottleneck up really fast at the same time as using 2x as much power! I'd go for a low end new intel setup with DDR4!

Is it smart to Overclock a 6 year old chip that much? Does 6 years of processing wear it out?

p.s, I had pentium 4's that cranked up to 4.5GHZ as a kid. They handled that like a trooper.

Whats your budget for getting your PC stable?
What size case do you have?
What Ram do you currently have as it tested OK?

Maybe a geekzoner like @dan who gave me a stunner of a deal on an older machine has the bits you need!
Actually im very sure he has some old Core 2 gear and pentiums with Mobos to suit.

That overclock also might want some water or liquid NO2

I will have a realistic budget of around $150, which will only cover getting a replacement mobo on ebay: Z97, LGA1150 for my existing G3258. And that is still a month or so away from being raised. Kids..braces....priorities.

It will be at least another year before I can even realistically look at upgrading the cpu.

It's a full sized ATX case. And I have 8GB RAM.

i dont have anything that old but somewhere in my office is a AMD 6 Core and AMD 8 core ready to go machines with windows 10 which i didnt get around to relist, similar to

If it were me, I'd scroll through trademe for a board that will get you up and running at normal clock rates with dual channel RAM.

Otherwise look offshore :)

There is very little on TM in the way of LGA 1150 mobo's under $200.
