paulchinnz:

I'd take G900 over MX Master if only one mouse for gaming/productivity - responsiveness is phenomenal and smaller/lighter.

For productivity MX Master because of the side scroll and speed adaptive scroll.

Wow, that is an expensive mouse!  Getting close to NZ$200...    I currently use a G602 on my desktop, and a Performance MX each for my laptop and Cintiq Companion.  As good a the Performance series are, I have decided that Gaming mice have the edge when it comes to sensitivity and and accuracy, and they are oh so important with things like Photoshop when doing stuff like placing the points for clipping paths.  I also like the G-buttons on the G series mice, which compliment the G-keys on the G910 I use.  I just love being able to switch workspaces, and other regular functions with a single button or key press.

Where the Performance MX falls down is the centre button when pushing the wheel.  That is an essential function with SketchUp, and my G602 does it way better than the Performance MX.   I recently looked at replacing the laptop mouse for that reason, but when looking at what I'd be spending, I decided to go the whole hog and get a 3DConnexion Space Mouse.  It took several hours of use to get good with it, but by heck it is good for moving about in a 3D environment.  That does not apply to Photoshop though.  The Space Mouse is hopeless with Photoshop.

You have got me thinking with the G900 I have to say.  It looks interesting, although a bit short on buttons.  Having said that, the G602 side buttons are not all easy to hit reliably, and I tend to use the keyboard G-keys more than the most of the mice buttons, but I'd miss not having some of them.   How easy is it to switch sensitivity for instance?

BTW  While typing this I had a call from an Indian sounding person in a noisy environment offering to fix my Windows operating system.  The very first time I have been the target of that scam.  I laughed.  Told him to go forth and multiply, and hung up.

@TLD switching sensitivity easy with the 2 DPI buttons (can be remapped) that sit behind the scrollwheel.

Funny you mention the centre button. I've just realised I haven't used that for at least months. I only ever used it for autoscrolling, and since having mice with free scroll, I haven't needed it.

I'm dreading working out what to buy if and when my MS Laser Mouse 5000 dies.

One of my Logitech G5 mice has a button failing :( I think the G400/500 are meant to be similar, but not quite similar enough for me to buy one yet. I got a G510 wireless and it's too small and light, feels weird after using the G5 for years.

Considering the Logitech MX Master for work, but there are quite a few Amazon reviews about poor quality. Some questions for @michaelmurfy @Lizard1977 @Item:

1. Can anyone give me opinions on the build quality of the MX Master?

2. Does it feel like it'd last a long time?

3. How's the size compared with a G5 / G700?

4. Any thoughts on the MX Master 2S? It's US$100, so even more expensive, but it comes in a nice plain black.

I have two G5's that are probably a decade old. One is great, the other has the right mouse button feeling funny and I suspect starting to fail - I might take it apart if I can work out how. I really like the size. A friend has a G700s which is much the same size and is good too. The MX510 wireless is far too small for what I'm used to.

Stuart Little??? Nah jokes..

I have a MX518 and its been a brilliant mouse. Logitech have always made good mice..

For gaming I have had disasterous mouse' in the past from the likes of Razer.

I would go with anything Microsoft or Logitech, but I would TRY IT OUT and fiddle with the DPI settings first. Most retail stores like JB Hifi etc have them on display.

I use a Logtech Trackman for Programming @ work (so i dont get a sore wrist),

And I would probably look at the logitech G500/510 (the one with the weights in it) for gaming. I would stay away from wireless for gaming.

Wireless Pros'
No cables

Cons:

You have to charge up or replace battery.... It is a nusance.

I've had the mx master about 2 years.
Store it in a sock in bag between work and home, use it about 40 hours/wk, all buttons still firm, sensor still as responsive as day 1, battery still goes for weeks before dropping a 'dot' of charge.

I have 2 MX Masters, one is a little over a year old and the second is about 6 months old. Both are excellent quality, and feel very nice and sturdy. I've had no issues with either. I had a MX Revolution prior that lasted about 10 years. In my mind there is no question about the reliability or quality of this mouse.

I haven't used the G5 or G700 so can't compare size I'm afraid. As for the colour, I find my Masters to be nice and discreet. Mostly black with some copper trim. It's not gaudy or flashy, just a good solid workhorse. I don't know about the 2S but I haven't found the colour scheme of the standard MX Master to be a problem.

1. 1 Year in and feels very solid and well made. Switches, scrolls and buttons all feel pretty "premium" IMHO. Battery life is great

2. So far, I would say so yes - no regrets even at the higher price

3. I had a GXX and it feels slightly taller in the palm than that, but I find it very comfortable. I probably have bigg-ish hands but stubby fingers if that helps!

4. Don't think I would want/need the file and other features of the 2s over mine personally, but it does look cool I guess!

I keep coming back to this thread, and feeling tempted.  I even had a look at Harvey Norman to see if that killer offer for the G900 was still available.  (No of course it wasn't).  But what I did find is that the is a G903 now.  It is even more expensive than the G900, ($199 at PB Tech), but you also need to spend another significant chunk of cash for the Powerplay Charging Mat (I am not sure if it is available yet, so don't know the price in NZ, but US$100, and UK£100) to realise one of its key features, wireless charging.  That sounds like NZ$350 for the mouse and mat, which is crazy!
