Who ? What sites ?

Never come across any sites blocked on the many ISP's I've been on over the past 10 years.

Out of interest, how well do the people behind sites like The Pirate Bay do from a financial point of view? Who'd have thought, way back when Google appeared and started to edge in front of AltaVista, that one day it would be one of the biggest companies in the world? Heck, I think they are more valuable as a brand than Apple right now. TPB obviously doesn't get as much traffic as Google, but it must get an awful lot of hits every day.

Hmmm... Apparently Peter Sunde is only worth US$500K, but perhaps that's after paying all his legal bills.

There is no technological solution to this. It is just an endless game of whack-a-mole. As pointed out above, the only repressive solution that would work even a little is something like China's. Even the Great Firewall can be circumvented, but the penalties can be severe. That would not be accepted in the West, unless we abandon democracy altogether.

Except if the business go for the jugular themselves?

Part of a letter HBO plans to send out on Game of Thrones

If only those streaming services were Dolby Digital like Netflix, sounds like they expect people to pay for a lower quality product then what a pirated version probably is...wow. And even after buying the stuff that don't want to watch if go the SoHo route they put crap writing all over the picture.

At least legally streaming music is in stereo and not mono. Oh well, guess a few million letters are going out now.

Its always been safe as you want it to be. No different from using FTP/HTTP for obtaining files.

Its just a transport method. Its what you download with it that might not be safe.

Supposedly , as part of an international agreement to block filesharing sites that didnt takedown reported pirated shares

And lets not pretend that its the fault of the movie/tv industry . Even the rich pirate movies & TV's rather than paying, so dont try & blame it on
poverty either.
Movies/tv downloads arnt a necessity of life. If you really think they are too expensive to rent for $5-$10 , then dont watch then.

Lets not try & justify theft . Since I cant afford a new reliable car its OK for me to take yours for the day . :-)

Wonder how it will go for those invitation only Linux distribution sites.
I know of one that a few people here are on that offer multiple proxies that work in the UK and bypass their restrictions, frequently updated. They also offer their own VPN/Tunnel service.

No, I meant what NZ ISPs... I'm unaware of any doing it (except the DIA filter).

As an Australian who's just moved here the torrent blocking thing was never an issue for anybody with technical nous.

It's easy enough to change your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and hell, even Foxtel stupidly advise as a fix for their (useless and subpar) on-demand streaming service suggest changing your router DNS to 8.8.8.8 to get around connectivity issues.

Cease and desists do come in and in my former work place I had to sit down with students and question why they were downloading this thing at this time and wait for an unwinnable response while telling them 'stop it your you'll lose your university enrollment.'.

It's the normal hydra affair. Cut the head off one and more spring up in their place.
