Batman:

i've read a few reviews comparing 1600X with i5s - the 1600X kills the intel in multithread as expected, but in gaming lags behind anywhere from 10-30% in FPS depending on how optimized a game is in using as many threads as possible, not sure about game loading, presumably in the same magnitude, but depending on price and how much effort you want (source 2nd hand intel vs don't care and just buy new AMD easy peezy) to put in, the AMD could be a winner.

At the time I did my research before buying my 1800x what I noticed with Ryzen is that their averages and lows were more consistent/higher than Intels which is what you would experience more often than the highs

This was also across the full Ryzen range and not just isolated the the one I was after

Photoshop is lightly threaded, and like games, clock speed is what makes all the difference. Of course it does not make nearly as much use of the GPU as games though. So the Puget System Photoshop benchmarks make interesting reading

This one is billed as i9X vs Threadripper, but it uses the 7700K as a comparison, so you can get a good idea of what low(ish) core count CPUs are going to offer best value for money.

I went with the i5 8400. Loving the six fast cores :-) And even without the cheaper B350 motherboard (only Z370's are here, till next year), and being gouged a bit on pricing for my 8400, I feel like I got decent value for money. It's hard to feel unhappy with such a lovely system now under my command. Even if I'd have saved a couple hundred dollars waiting till next year.

I do think I'll need to upgrade from the stock cooler which is a bit whiny.

Batman:

Umm ...  2 words - clock speed? ie single threaded speed is not as good for gaming?

Not really as true anymore or it is becoming much less true with newer releases one example would be assassins creed where more cores = better the Ryzen 5 1600 beats the 7th gen I5 with ease:

Yes I've been informed now!

I have 2 laptops - a dual core 3.5GHz (new) and Quad Core 2.9GHz (4 years old).

The quad core seems to smoke the dual core even in general windows 10 use. I was surprised, in the past clock speed was king.

Well for a "budget gaming" at 1080 - Grab a i7-2600K (if you could find one) with a 1070.

Wow, that was interesting.

I have a 4770K and was going to upgrade, but recently threw in a GTX1080TI and have felt happy with that. Still may upgrade to 8700K once the components drop in popularity and price slightly, but I don't do the rendering etc. I may do some video editing once I get going with my gopro however.

I recently built a cheap rig using a used i7-4700 and a new 1060. All up was around $700 (ex peripherals). Super happy with the price/performance and will have me set for a long time.

I am still unsure why an upgrade from 1070 to 1080TI didn't result in GTAV having better framerates (maybe 5fps).

It'll be useful if you're going to be transcoding 4K :)
