rayonline: I used a old case.  I don't need a window side panel and blinking lights.  Cleaning the dust takes the longest part.

Cleaning the dust out is where an air compressor comes in handy, about a minute and you're done.

I'm not a big fan of side windows or lots of LEDs etc either (and I specifically ruled out cases that had those), the OCD in me just likes it all as tidy as possible. Off topic, but I only got the new case was because I needed more drive bays - the previous case was probably getting close to being 15 years old!

You'll get the zealots chastising you for using an air compressor  . You know you've blown up your system each
time you do that

Really, what's the problem with that? I know they can damage fans, but I always hold those in place with a plastic pen when blowing them out.

I know that my reply is going to be well out of scope. But this topic, which would have interested me a decade ago, has gone the way of dial-up modems, and scanners, and inkjet printers.

Only a gaming specialist would be interested in a desktop now, and they would have definite ideas about what they need. Everyone else would be better off with a laptop, and a couple of external monitors, a Keyboard and mouse, and a laptop stand such as Roost. (https://www.therooststand.com/)

Definitely and other specific users like photography, video, video and audio encoding :) I use it for a photography hobby.

Was just talking to someone and as a HTPC, more practical just to use a laptop to the TV.

For people laptops are the way.  Even with the Mac Pro that some professional photographers and videographers use, it's a little shuttle case with a M.2 drive but the storage drives are outside in a external RAID configuration.  Which kinda make sense, what is important are the drives and it shouldn't be dependent on the system.  Some travelling photographers also use a laptop and edit on the road.

Even some workplaces now only provide laptops to employees.  They can use them at the desk with the dock, network cabling etc and they can use it at offsite, at home or in meeting rooms.

There are other areas that have quietly died as well. such as big computer desks with holders for the printer, box, etc. We have thrown so many things out, no worry about back up media (Dropbox), no CD /DVD's (3 laptops no DVD drive), those crappy logitech speakers everyone had. Life has become blissfully minimalist with a laptop

That's true. Laptop + Cloud storage = Win. The latter is also important.
