Deep web and Dark Web are two different things, but as noted on Wikipedia the terms are often used interchangeably and incorrectly particularly by mainstream media.

The Deep web in simple terms is "anything on the internet that's not indexed (or index-able) by mainstream search engines". For example, the "internal" web pages you see after logging into internet banking or netflix etc.

The Dark web is websites that are only accessible via an overlay network running on to of the internet, the most common of which would be the Tor/Onion network. It's most often associated with "very" illegal things in the public eye (kiddie porn, terrorism, drugs, etc) but in general is just used for anonymity. Tor for instance was originally built with ONR/DARPA money to allow US spys to anonymously/untraceably communicate on the internet.

I'm glad this came up because I have often wondered myself - being an avid reader of Jason Bourne books and the like, there's always these references to it all, but I really don't know what I am supposed to be envisioning, so I see (in my mind's eye) Reddit, running in dark mode.

Haha Handsome thats pretty much what perked my interest, I mean Id heard of them before.

And thaks Lias, it wasnt until this thread and watching a documentary for me to realise there was 2.

I thought before even looking into it, it was like a new bittorent or something. I know this sounds lame but I had never used Bittorent, but I knew people who had. I think now days with streaming media its just so affordable there is no need for torrents, I presume there are no torrent sites anymore.
