@jase2985 Thank you for that link, I have not seen that brochure before, it's much more detailed than anything I've been able to find on the internet.

I did notice a wee 2-pin plug, but it never occurred to me that I could use it with a 6-pin to make an 8-pin! And I'm normally not too bad at maths. :)

Bare in mind, consumer cards have a video decoding limit. The Quadro here doesn't (ideal for larger Plex servers or multiple transcodes).

Seeing as how I only encode one file at a time, does the limit even matter?

@michaelmurphy , thankyou, I have seen that offer already. A nice card but I need to have another peeky inside my PC to see if it would fit. It may be too tall and not fit under the drive cage. A job for today.

A new question: how is the height of a graphics card measured? When the specs say a card is xx cm tall, does that include or exclude the bit that goes in the slot?

I am totally unsure whether I can fit a card that requires a power connector. To buy one that does would be a gamble.

I have whittled my choices down to:

A. Any one of 3 GTX1050Ti 4GB Low Profile cards, but preferably the Gigabyte GBTGV-N105TOC-4GL as it has 2*HDMI, but only Mighty Ape seems to have it at $350 - GASP!.

B. GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1650 OC 4G Graphics Card, 2 x WINDFORCE Fans, 4GB 128-Bit GDDR5, GV-N1650OC-4GD Video Card retailing for around $300.

C. GIGABYTE GeForce® GTX 1650 MINI ITX OC 4G GV-N1650IXOC-4GD retailing for around $290

D. Omnious' Quadro P2000 5GB, slightly used at $500.

I am leaning towards B (2 fans) or C (1 fan); does 2 fans mean twice as noisy? They also have the newer Volta NVENC, but not the Turing one like all the series 16 cards.

Is the P2000 worth $200 more for only an extra GB of RAM, and the previous gen PASCAL NVENC? I would take some convincing on this point I think.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

And yes, I do realise that a week or two after buying something that a low profile GTX1660Ti will probably hit the market. :)

1650 cards don't have the latest NVENC ip block. They use the older one.

If you want the latest one, you need at least a 1660 card,

Apparently the older one is still pretty good, just not the best.

EDIT: The quadro isnt worth the extra price. Its still using the old NVENC from the 10XX series cards.

Here is my understanding of NVENC development.

4th gen = Pascal

5th gen = Volta

6th gen = Turing

All series 16 cards have Turing NVENC except for the 1650 cards which have Volta.

All the non-1650 series 16 cards require a power connector and as such are off my radar.

If I could find a 1660 card that had no power connector or was low profile that would be ideal, but I don't think they exist.

Does anyone have anything to add regarding whether there is much noise difference between 1 and 2 fan cards?

Yes, It looks like you've got the right idea.

FYI Nvidia have come out and said that Volta and Pascal NVENC are functionally the same.

It is worth asking you to be more specific about your use case? What are you wanting it to do exactly?

Pascal NVENC is probably fine for most use cases, and you could get by with a GTX 1050 as the bare minimum.

@dairyxox , I just want to use NVENC to encode large raw video files down to smaller x265 files. I currently use IntelQSV(x264) but H265 encoding takes forever on my pc. I recently read about NVENC and as I dont currently have a graphics card, thought it would be worth a crack.

I have just noticed on the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC, GV-N1660OC-6GD card that the power connector seems to be quite recessed.

If that were to fit, is it worth paying the $150-200 extra for?

It may be overkill now, but you never know what future requirements you may need.

What kind of resolution & bitrate?

What is important to you; speed, quality, compatibility, file size?

I use Handbrake and Vidcoder, both support NVENC. Reading the change-log for Vidcoder was how I found out about NVENC. I haven't tried encoding any 4K source files as of yet, only 1080p, but I just bought a 4K TV and my phone and video camera can produce 4K content, so that day is coming soon.

Speed is probably the most important thing. Followed by quality, then size. But really, all 3 are pretty close in priority. I would expect a decent graphics card would improve all 3 criteria on my existing setup, possibly considerably, which is 6-7 years old.

So I guess a card that wouldn't feel ashamed in my next pc, might be criteria #4.

MSI and Zotac(?) have just released low-profile GTX1650 cards. Not available in NZ yet, but all I have to do is be patient. Not a quality I am generally known for.
