something like the Torque or vortex will be more than capable of what you want to do and will go well into the future plus they save you a bit from your max budget.

My vote is Pulse or Vortex. Nice and easy, they'll both do what you want, the Vortex has better hardware for gaming.

I think they were trying to help you but you didn't understand anything they were saying.

These are the things you need for your computer.

1. Desktop/Laptop - from what you're describing it doesn't matter. But desktop is cheaper, but laptop is mobile.

2. Assuming you go desktop - buy it from a shop/get them to build - if it doesn't work they will sort it out. don't build yourself.

from what you're describing the most important thing you need is the CPU and SSD. Everything else not so important. I recommend

- going Intel 9xxx or AMD 3XXX. Intel or AMD doesn't matter for your purpose, though AMD is a bit faster for the same money, but you don't get an integrated GPU (or wifi?). THe latest generation starting with these numbers are much faster than those starting with a smaller number, giving you future proofing that you are after.

- SSD - the exact model does not matter. get the biggest one you can afford, either 1TB or 2TB.

- some form of backup

3. that's all really, the minor things

- 8GB ram is fine for you. any RAM model is fine

- do you need Wifi. I believe the Intel 9XXX comes with wifi but I cannot be sure, just check it has wifi if you need it.

- you do not need a dedicated graphics card if you go with Intel.

Having said that!

From the link you were given, the Vortex or Pulse is what you want. Just see if you can get the SSD upgraded to 1-2TB, though 500GB meets the minimum you want and should be fine.

Pulse probably has better value for money being last gen product.

You will not notice any difference in what you do. You want to go at 100kph. The Paladin can do 300kph. THe Pulse can do 220kph.

In terms of ongoing "servicing" I thought one of the geeks around here run a mobile support service, can't remember who. There is very little to do. Sometimes things don't work and it's a very easy 3-4 clicks for someone like those geeks who are in the know. In terms of physical maintenance they are far easier than maintaining a house or a car. Maybe just clean the dust every year and that's it.

I forsee your main problem is when you browse the web you click on things (everything has ads nowadays, from youtube to facebook to geekzone lol) and they install unwanted software on your system, hopefully nothing malicious.

1. 8700 is hands down better than 9400

2. ideally you want wireless AC (that's assuming your router supports AC - AND you have fast internet to begin with)

Imo get a b450 motherboard and a Ryzen 5 3600 instead, better bang for your buck. The Intel's only pull ahead for gaming, amd owns productivity these days

Nothing found what a Gigabyte Brix i5 or intel NUC i5 couldn't handle in an office environment. Those barebones are quite powerful, very compact and quiet devices and can have second live i.e. for server/firewall/bastion host use later on. Most often they don't even need a fan or spinning rust drive (use NVME SSD instead).

- NET: FTTH & VDSL, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT: thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D: two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

I ended up going to ExtremePC and went with the below plus a few extras (dvd player, 16GB Ram).

John was really helpful. Arrived at 9.30am, machine was ready at 1.30pm. So good having a desktop again. Everyone's help was much appreciated.

The 8700 is a great processor. That with 16GB RAM will rip through anything you need to do.

I personally think Ryzen 5 is the go to for mid-tier stuff at the moment, but probably need to build the system yourself to retain that value.
