I was going to say Bios reset to default, leave PC on Bios screens and if it doesn't crash then should be OK.

Was your disk set to IDE or AHCI? Thats a common symptom on Bios reset Windows starts then stops.

Can only spot a GA-P55A-UD3 (not your GA-55A-UD3) on the internet dated about 2010....

Maybe your MB is just getting a bit tired... power supply capacitors out of spec... etc...

No BIOS updates either?

No updates. It is GA-P55A-UD3. Bios reports all voltages good

ah just saw you have a GA-P55A-UD3, well if you are in Auckland I can loan you a known working graphics card to test.

My search for your MB did appear to show DVI and HDMI graphics ports.
You could remove your graphics card and just use the MB graphics for further testing.

I hope the three suggestions below might help:

I have installed Mint many times from a DVD and on occasions, it takes a very long time. Have you checked the HD light for activity, If the light flickers then stuff is being loaded.

If you have access to another computer download one of the many Linux Rescue disks and see if that works.

Have you checked the DVD Drive? I blast of compressed air might help or if you can borrow one use a stand-alone DVD drive.

It does sound like a mainboard issue though.

So cinnamon boots and can do a memtest but other nix live cds cant boot and neither can windows.

Really sounds like instability, I would raise the volts by 10-20mV (0.010V increments) on cpu vcore or offset and see if it can boot. Otherwise lower clocks by 100-200MHz if you’re not comfortable changing voltage settings. Things like ‘voltage reports good’ doesn’t really tell much.

It might be that the graphics card is not letting you boot past display init but you’d need a spare to test.

Neither Cinnamon version boot fully. It displays the LM symbol, reads from disc and then just stops The discs haves a start menu which allows various options. I have done its memory test which took about half an hour each - I did 2 sets with no problem.

I agree that it could be the graphics card -'NomiNomi' has offered a loan

Clima: ... Another option is "Start in compatibility mode". Not sure what it is but I tried it. It lists actions as it progresses and stops every time on line :-

Compatibility mode generally means generic drivers, minimal hardware detection & low screen resolution.

Posts on kernel.org and redhat.com suggest to load the live CD with pci=noacpi or acpi=off. Another thread on linuxquestions.org also points to a hardware failure.

ACPI errors are 90% of the time related to expansion cards .. like GPU or Wifi etc .. so remove everything you can.

So if you have an 1155 CPU with no integrated GPU (Xeons and I5-7xx and I7-8xx didnt but I5-6xx and I3-5xx units did) I would try and get another GPU.

Also, this can happen if you have installed the OS with the BIOS set to "IDE" mode and then changed to "AHCI" or vise versa.

I have done a lot of experimenting with Xeons on these systems and If it means buying a new GPU I would invest in a 2nd or 3rd gen option .. more performance, features and relaibility.
