+1 for Synology. I bought a DS412+ 7 years ago and it hasn't missed a beat.

Am considering moving to DS218+ and investigating a Plex server, but given it will be over $1k with new drives, and am still mulling over the cost benefit. I was hoping Synology were going to announce an upgrade this year as the 218+ is several years old, but this didn't eventuate.

Yes, the 220+ was announced in May this year, hopefully it will be available soon :)

Ah - thanks, not sure how I missed this. Will definitely give the 218+ a miss and wait for more news on the 220+

have a 216+ii here, upgraded it to 8gb of ram myself and it goes great ! literally just put some bigger drivers in it last night too

Because linking a usb to router in my experience produced a glacial unstable limited service with the vodafone router.

A lots of people have given their options on how dedicated nascar so much better.

I don't agree with you on the nascar bit 😝, but I agree with everybody else that a NAS is a more stable, easier to support long term solution.

I was addressing the "not to flash" portion of the OP. There is a certain simplicity & ease of life to the idea of sticking a USB flash drive or a self powered little laptop sized external USB drive to a router. It can be a set & forget situation, no usernames, no extra power point required, no extra LAN cable, all managed from the same web interface as the router instead of learning a new interface, bla bla bla.

I felt this option should at least get a mention.

The OP states it would be for "temporary storage" to transfer files between computers, so I would add to my previous comment

Don't buy a 2TB HDD, buy a 64GB flash drive max. That will help keep this storage as temporary because not too much can accumulate there
Once the OP's needs grow from the "temporary" local storage to longer term storage, it'll still be easy enough to migrate to a full NAS solution
For use, having the ability to access the files when away from home / the office makes Google Drive a good solution. We share a folder and Google Backup & Sync replicates it to each PC locally. No need for sneaker net style USB drives or NAS. Files automatically replicate when saved in the shared folder.

Once you are aware of the option, choose something that works for you. Sooner or later, you will (have to) change anyway. 👩‍🎓
