Jase2985: Fix Overscan Using Intel Graphics Driver

If you use Intel Graphics Drivers (i.e. if you have an Intel CPU), then you can use the Intel Graphics Control Panel to fix the overscan on your TV.

Go to the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (either through the taskbar or by right-clicking on your desktop and finding it there). In the Control Panel click “General Settings,” select the TV from the “Display” dropdown, then click “Customize Aspect Ratio” under Scaling.

Finally, use the sliders in the “Preview” image to the right to adjust the picture until it fits on your TV.

easiest way to to do it on the TV though

On the tv makes it look awful because its enlarging a partial image back up to the full screen with all the artifacts that brings with it. Its part of the reason that broadcast TV looks so chunky compared to real content - the other is interlacing but that's just another bad decision by the broadcast industry that we have to deal with.

Actually, I was speaking facetiously. I don't usually stick a smiley or whatever on it when I do; I just figure people will get it from the context. I suppose I should be clearer.

Apart from that, I appreciate any help with these kinds of things and I always try to make that clear.

I have tried to do this repeatedly with the Intel Graphics control panel but I can't seem to change it. No doubt I am missing something blindingly obvious. It wouldn't be the first time (another facetious comment). I will try again later but the TV is in use right now.

Apart from the Intel issue, I have been researching the Sony and am finding comments to the effect that overscan can't be disabled on it. Instead, there is a 'full pixel' setting, but that doesn't make any difference. I can't find anything else that would change this from the TV end.

I hadn't thought to restart the driver. I will do that now. Thanks for the suggestion.

If the computer is adding underscan, then setting the TV to 1:1 or full screen or whatever they call it will have the black around the image. Underscan or overscan correction is for when you have a TV that refuses to show things in an exact pixel mapped way, like some older junk brands sold in the US.

The computer either needs to be changed to a PC mode (not consumer electronics mode) for the output which never needs underscanning.

Also, if the TV is not a 1080p one but one of the 768 ones, good luck on that.

OK, I was able to grab the TV for a moment. Restarted driver. No difference. Tried control panel again, realised what I have is not what you or other sources are describing. I get six boxes labelled Display, 3d, Options and Support, Video, Power, Profiles. I have gone through them all. Only Display comes close. It lets me choose between built-in display and Sony TV, and I can change a few things, but nothing that helps. Under scaling there are no options except the default one, which for the Sony is 'centre image'. There is nothing I can change that affects the display size on the Sony. I don't know what else to try.

According to the manual the TV is 1080p and 'pc formats'. It is actually a pretty good TV, though getting on in years.

I'm just trying to view it full screen, like I can with any other laptop or TV. Plug it in, have it appear, nothing further needed, if that is what you mean by 'clone'.

Clone, Show what I see on the laptop screen. And also same stuff on external device.

If you have different aspect ratio monitors, or too high a resolution. It will scale or crop.

Extend. Show my laptop. And also enable 2nd device on it's own settings

Windows-P. show external Only = rule out any of that rubbish. And let the TV decide/tell the laptop what it is capable of.

Thanks. I do get that. I just don't get why it is such a problem in this particular case. Aspect ratios are the same, or at least similar. TV is 1080p and under. Computer is 1366x768. Panasonic has no problem with this. I have tried every possible display setting and combination thereof, and nothing changes that bloody window on the TV.

If the TV doesnt tell the computer that it can do the low resolution then it will get changed to fit by the computer. Is the other TV also a non 1080 like the computer?

TV is taller/wider - 1920x1080

So if in clone 312 extra lines got to go somewhere. Or be squashed. (or the edges sliced or over-scanned). In the case of the sony, the preference is obviously fit. Which would increase more top/bottom/side. May be relevant

If your laptop is still using the old Windows drivers right-click on the desktop and click "Intel Graphics Settings". (alternatively press the Windows key and start typing Intel to find the application). You will see the option to either turn overscan off or to position the image within a rectangle - this will show much % of overscan is being applied and allows you:

If you are using the new drivers you can open Windows 10 store and download the new Intel Graphics Command Center.

If it's not your laptop, the tv has overscan enabled. Same solution but on the tv

If the TV had overscan enabled, then there would be parts of the picture missing. Black bars all around is the source adding those to cater for a display with an overscan problem.
