Do the same cautions for compatible ink cartridges still apply for compatible toner cartridges? I've got a Brother laser printer and have been using compatible toner with it for a while but I often find they tend to drop toner on the page (yes, I've tried the cleaning methods and that sometimes improves things but never fixes it entirely).

Compatible toners are usually refills .
If it leaks , it usually means they did a crappy job of re-manufacturing them (I used to do that for a job )
They often wont replace all the parts they should (seals, wipers, drum unit) , just to save time & money.
Ive even seen refills where they drilled a big hole in the side to fill it, then taped over that hole (rather than use the filler cap)

On average , compatible/refill toners are never as reliable as Genuine new , but should be good enough .
Even the some Printer manufacturers used to sell refilled/reman'ed toner carts a while back.

Thanks for the info @1101, that's interesting to know. Most of what I print is for myself (eg I don't give it to anyone else) so it's good enough for me as I don't mind the odd bit of toner dropped and the savings far outweigh the minor irritation.
