I've been using the one that needs the tape in its enclosure for maybe 3 months no problem and its got about half full. Hopefully it'll be the same after adding the tape, unless, as mentioned, I've knackered it.

I have another 12TB WD which has just been connected to the pc but with nothing on it also for three months. That, of course, having nothing on it, seems to be fine.

Running 6TB HGST drives in my Synology

Their power on time is 46945 hours, nearly 24/7 for 5 years.. not bad.

Just use a molex to sata adapter without that pin and there is no need for the tape. Tape is really only needed if you have a backplane or similar and that pin is there and connected to 3.3v vs nothing or being absent.

what app/docker is that?! looks real nice.

I've got a mixture of shucked reds and Toshibas. I have found them to be really reliable.

my older 2TB's are starting to get close to failure time now. I'm slowly cycling them out for 10TB hot spares.

I've been running shucked 8TB Seagate Backup Hub Plus drives in mine 24/7 for years at this point.  They've really been rock solid.  I'm not sure the NAS designation is worth the extra.

Ditto.

I have been shucking drives purchased from Amazon for cheap for several years now and these have worked well in my unRAID box - several drives 6+ years now.

Admittedly these are spun down most of the time and only spin up when accessed, or during maintenance / parity checks - but yeah I haven't felt the need for NAS designated drives.

Note: It might be a different story if they were spun up 24/7 eg. security system monitoring or if they were storing more critical/irreplaceable data.

I've only ever bought drives from local online NZ etc. Is it better off going through Amazon?
