1) Whatever you use, enable 2FA (immediately).

2) See 1.

mgeek: What's recommend these days for remote IT supporting friends/family? ... TeamViewer looks good ...

You can start here: https://alternativeto.net/software/teamviewer/
Some people might find this helpful: https://www.capterra.co.nz/software/194565/teamviewer#alternatives
Or this: https://www.g2.com/compare/anydesk-vs-teamviewer
Or this: https://www.trustradius.com/products/teamviewer/competitors

TeamViewer

  1. Install TeamViewer Host instead of the full TeamViewer client

    1. The host component allows a remote connection in, but does not install the client to connect out, less visual clutter for your friends / family to worry about
    2. TeamViewer QuickSupport is limited by UAC, Host runs as a system process
    3. Host also works on the login screen
    4. One time setup only

  2. Previously, you could save your favourites in a list & see if they are online & name the favourites
  3. I like the File Transfer window, similar to File Commander / Midnight Commander
  4. At all costs, avoid connecting to mixed free / commercial TeamViewer clients. You will be locked out because of the commercial connection
  5. Nice ribbon with support tools like sending key strokes, screen resolutions, reboot, etc..
  6. Seems like deep system integration, i.e. late disconnect & early reconnect during the boot process

    1. I think it also now supports rebooting into "safe mode with networking"

  7. Good scaling across different screen sizes
  8.

AnyDesk

  1. Seems cheaper than TeamViewer
  2. One time set up for permanent remote support
  3. Download & run is limited by UAC. Activation of permanent remote access runs as a system process
  4. Can save favourites, but free version does not support the address book
  5. Pretty fast
  6. Good scaling across different screen sizes
  7. 🎯 🎯 🎯 You can also support iPhone & Android as well

I used to use Teamviewer until it got it into its head that I was using it for commercial reasons (I wasn't, I used it once or twice a month, for about an hour each time). After that it would always shut down every time I started it up. Uninstall/reinstalls didn't help.

I switched to Anydesk and haven't looked back since. This is for connecting my Linux PC to a Windows PC at my friend's house.

The issue you will have, is getting the other person to download & run it.

"whats a browser, how do I find my desktop, cant find the download folder "
Even getting them to the download page for TV or Anydesk etc is a pain , then they click the download link & cant find that file they downloaded.

PC's Ive previously added TV QS shortcut to the desktop, they cant find it on the desktop (when I finally get access, yep there it is , right there where I put it, on the desktop )

I sometimes get them to download Anydesk , then I can get our old licensed TV up & running on their PC & use that .

^ that’s part n parcel of phone support. For my Nana I’ve drawn pictures of icons that she needs to click into a notebook. Classic is the little camera icon in Skype which looks like a box with a triangle stuck on the side

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.
